Caylee Hammack is on cloud nine after receiving the news that country superstar Alan Jackson wrote a song based on a letter she sent to him thanking him for recording a duet with her on a cover of the Don Williams’ classic “Lord I Hope This Day Is Good.” In the letter, she said for a man that never cries, her daddy was crying happy tears after listening to her daughter and the iconic Alan Jackson sing together.

His team didn’t really know that he wrote it about that until he was talking about the songs on the record. “The truth be known, the hook came from a young artist that’s on my label, a girl named Caylee Hammack,” says Alan. “She wanted to record this old Don Williams song, ‘Lord I Hope This Day Is Good.’ And I love that song and I love Don anything. And so, I agreed to sing it with her and it’s her record…and she’s a great singer. She sounded beautiful on it. And after we had recorded it she sent me a nice gift or two and a letter and the letter was – she’s from Georgia, like I am from somewhere up north of Atlanta – that she had taken the rough track we had sent her and played it for her daddy who is probably my age. But he was a big fan of mine and this was in the letter that she played it for him and he…yeah, I guess he teared up about it and she just thought it was really something from a man who never cries. And I thought I need to write that.”

Caylee’s team just sent over the song and said they wanted her reaction caught on camera. Little did she know the song was based on her father. “I listened to the song, and I just fell in love with the song and it made me think of my dad. Well, I’m already excited to listen to a (new) Alan Jackson song but I don’t know why I’ve gotten the chance to,” says Caylee. “I called the team and I tell them it reminds me of my dad, but why did he send it? They explain to me that this was inspired by a letter that I had written Alan Jackson and a line specifically about my dad, a man that never cries but crying happy tears when he heard our version of ‘Lord I Hope This Day is Good.’ It just blew me away to be completely honestly. I didn’t even know to wish for this, but still it’s just a dream come true. I’m so grateful to Alan Jackson, Mr. Jackson, I don’t know what I should call him just yet, but I am so very grateful. He made my dad’s day, once again.”

On March 26th, an EF-4 tornado – just shy of the most-powerful ranking on the National Weather Service’s scale – ripped across Newnan…the city where Jackson and his wife, Denise were born, raised, met and married. “After the tornadoes came through Newnan I knew that I wanted to do what I could to help my hometown. I started working on an idea to do some kind of benefit in Nashville to help those affected in Newnan, but then heard from a group of leaders in Newnan,” Jackson stated when the event was officially announced earlier this week. “I’m glad we came up with a way to bring this show to my hometown…and I’m happy to be helping the people who need it most.”

Country superstar Alan Jackson releases his first album of all new music in six years today. Where Have You Gone features 21 songs – 15 of them written by the Songwriters Hall of Fame member himself. It’s his 16^th studio album – the 25^th in a career that includes two Christmas albums, two gospel albums, three Greatest Hits collections, a bluegrass album, and one boxed set. Longtime producer Keith Stegall again plays that role on Where Have You Gone.

On Sunday, May 30, Jackson will appear as part of the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS (8:00pm ET). He’s currently featured on Apple Music’s Essentials Radio, reflecting on his life and career with host Kelleigh Bannen.

Led by the self-penned title track, Where Have You Gone is highlighted by such songs as the poignant and thoughtful “Things That Matter,” the heartache-filled “Way Down in My Whiskey” and the tender “I Can Be That Something.” Never one to shy away from reflecting real life in his music, “You’ll Always Be My Baby” and “I Do” were written for his daughters’ weddings…while “Where Her Heart Has Always Been” was written for his mother’s funeral and includes a recording of her reading from The Bible. Where Have You Gone, which encompasses 21 tracks, is Alan’s 16th studio album — his 25th in a storied career that includes two Christmas albums, two gospel albums, three Greatest Hits collections, a bluegrass album and one boxed set.

It has taken Alan Jackson a few years to release a new album. Where Have You Gone, the Hall of Famer’s first album in six years, was delayed for a multitude of personal reasons – he lost his mother (affectionately called “Mama Ruth”) in 2017; and just a year later (2018), his son-in-law, Ben Selecman who was married to his eldest daughter Mattie, tragically died after a fall. For a while, he says, he didn’t even feel like making music, but once he did, then the global pandemic hit.

“I think we were pretty much on track to do an album like we typically have every couple of years or two or three years and just had some little rough spots in my life and personal things that slowed us down and set me back that we had to get through, my family and myself. And for several years there, I really didn’t feel like writing at all and recording, and it took a while to get back in gear,” says Alan. “And last spring, I think it was, I was ready, and we booked studio time and got ready to go in and I started thinking about writing songs again. And then the virus thing hit and everything kind of came to a halt and we dealt with that all last year.”

The Newnan, Georgia native added “And then later in the summer, I called Keith Stegall, my producer, and said ‘hey man, I’m tired of waiting on this thing. Let’s just do it.’ So, we just decided to go ahead and get everybody in the studio whether they had to wear a mask or a helmet or whatever they had to wear and get in there and cut this thing. (laughs)”

Alan wrote 15 of the 21 songs on the new album Where Have You Gone, which is available on Friday (May 14th).

Alan Jackson, Mickey Guyton and Vince Gill will perform during the National Memorial Day Concert airing May 30th on PBS at 8pm ET. The 90-minute special, hosted by actors Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds) and Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump, Truman, CSI: NY), will feature all-star performance and tributes from Washington, D.C. and around the nation honoring our American heroes.
