• GEORGE STRAIT AND JAMEY JOHNSON GOT TOGETHER TO WRITE A ‘COUNTRY’ SONG.

George Strait just released his new box set, Strait Out of the Box: Part 2, last Friday (November 18th), and one of the new songs garnering a lot of attention is “Kicked Outta Country,” which he co-wrote with Jamey Johnson after a conversation they had one night.

George says he’s been very fortunate and certainly very blessed to have the career he has right now. “It’s just something that happens at some point in everyone’s career. It doesn’t mean I have to like it, but ‘cause I always expected it was gonna come at some point. It’s a little hard to take after all these years to release something at radio, and it doesn’t get played anymore because for so long I just kinda got used to hearing things on the radio,” says George. “Anyway, the song’s kinda about that. I’ve been very fortunate, don’t get me wrong. I’ve had a lot of longevity in this business, and I’m very grateful for it. I’ve got a lot of great fans out there who still support me. They come out to my shows in Vegas and it’s a great night. It’s great seeing ‘em, and I’m very blessed.”

King George, who began his career before his 1981 hit “Unwound” hit the airwaves, says he still loves making music and will continue to do so as long as his fans want it.

The Country Music Hall of Famer and entertainer is definitely one of the hippest guys around. For example, George and Jamey weren’t in the same room, hell, probably not even the same state when they wrote the song. They did it by texting lyrics back and forth. “We wrote it all with texting,” says George. “We wrote the whole song texting. [laughs] Well, I mean people do it all the time now. It’s so common. I see Bubba Skyping and writing with somebody somewhere and it’s just so easy to do. Yeah, I just started scribbling stuff down and I’d send it, he’d send something back, I’d send something back and that’s the way it happened.”

I just wrote a new song today
I pulled out my old guitar, and I started to play
Pressing my fingers into the strings
I felt the feeling a country song brings

I did some Jones, and one for The Hag
Waylon and Willie, and the great Johnny Cash
They all got kicked outta country back then
But then one day country came calling again

    Cash stomped out the footlights
    Haggard, he had a ball
And Willie and Waylon, they stole the nation
And Jones showed up after all

The other new song on Strait Out of the Box Part Two is “Gotta Go Through Hell,” which George co-wrote with his son, Bubba, and iconic tunesmith Dean Dillon.

Strait Out of the Box Part Two, which also features his current single “Goin’, Goin’, Gone,” is available now exclusively through Walmart.

  • GEORGE STRAIT INCLUDES A PAIR OF NEW SONGS ON HIS NEW BOX SET.

George Strait just released his newbox set, Strait Out of the Box: Part 2 on Friday (November 18th), and it features a couple of new songs, including “Gotta Go Through Hell,” which he co-wrote with his son, Bubba, and celebrated tunesmith Dean Dillon. After listening to the song on which the legendary session guitarist Brent Mason played on, George said it kind of reminded him of the theme song from the HBO show, True Blood.

“I haven’t watched it in a long time, but when it was new I watched it a lot. So I heard that, I’m like hmmm, that sounds like something I remember,” says George. “And then I mentioned it. I don’t know if Brent played that on. He could have. It could be Brent. But he’s an amazing guitar player and the guitar part – well, all of his guitar parts are amazing. He plays on a lot of my sessions and most everything that I do.”

Strait  Out of the Box Part Two is a three-disc, 56-track collection, featuring 36 hit singles including 26 No. 1s, plus two brand new songs, his latest radio single “Goin’ Goin’ Gone” and 18 choice album cuts.

NOTE: “Bad Things” was written and recorded by Jace Everett, who was signed to Epic Records in Nashville in 2005.

Audio / George Strait says the song “Gotta Go Through Hell” from his new box set reminds him of “Bad Things,” the theme song from the TV show, True Blood, which is now on Netflix.

George says he’s looking forward to releasing a third box set at some point because he still has something to say.

“I do feel like I still have something to say. I feel like I have a lot of songs in me to write. I have a lot of ideas that I want to get out there for people to hear. I still feel relevant in this business. I feel like I can still sing as good as I ever could,” says Strait. “And my band is great. I love playing with them. Every night we’re out there. And so I don’t see – I can’t just see me not being a part of this. I want to get my records out there.”

“What my plans are is to do two nights of number one songs. Since I’ve got 60, obviously I can’t do 60 in one night or I may never sing again. [laughs] But I’ll try to do 30. I’ll do 30 one night and I’ll do 30 the next night.  So…and as I’m thinking about the 60 songs and the 30 songs that I’m going to do, I’m thinking, well, I’ve got a lot of songs that I have to do on each show that maybe weren’t number ones, like ‘Amarillo By Morning’ wasn’t a number one song. I can’t not do ‘Amarillo’ and there’s songs like that that I will still have to do.  So, it’s probably going to be a pretty long show each night.”

  • GEORGE STRAIT’S SET TO RELEASE HIS SECOND BOX SET.

George Strait is set to release Strait Out of the Box: Part 2 exclusively with Walmart on Friday (November 18th). The three-disc, 56-track collection features 36 hit singles (26 No. 1s) in addition to two brand new songs, co-written by George, along with 18 choice album cuts, all personally selected by the King of Country Music. The collections spans 20 years from 1996 to 2016, picking up right where his eight-times platinum selling 1995 release, Strait Out of the Box, left off.

Other than having multiple platinum songs, numerous awards and 60 No. 1 hits, one thing remains the same for George – his consistency. “I think I know what works for me. There’s been a few times where I’ve been fooled, but I think for the most part I know what’s going to work for me and I know what I like,” says George. “And I’ve always said it’s the melody that catches me the first time I hear a song, and then you kind of go back and listen to what the song is about and what it’s saying. So, if both of those are good then you get the whole package.”

You still have an opportunity to pre-order Strait Out of the Box: Part 2, along with select merchandise, including a silver-plated belt buckle identical to the one featured on the collection’s cover. For more information, go here.

You can catch George performing exclusive dates at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas December 2nd and 3rd, as well as February 17th and 18th.

“Consciously, the only thing I did was just try to go out and find the best songs I could find, cut the best songs I could cut and…there’s been times when I’ve gone in the studio with a song that I thought would be great for me and after about two or three tries I just can’t because it’s just not working, whether it’s vocally or whether I’m just not feeling the song at all. There’s been a few of those times, not a lot of them but there have been a few of them.  So I think I’ve been – I think I know what works for me.  Like I said there’s been a few times where I’ve been fooled but it but I think for the most part I know what’s going to work for me and I know what I like and I’ve always said it’s the melody that catches me the first time I hear a song and then you kind of go back and listen to what the song is about and what it’s saying.  So if both of those are good then you get the whole package.”

George Strait (Box Set) OC: …old stuff. :47
“When going back through all of the songs for the box set, I tell you, it does bring back a lot of old memories and you do tend to forget about those songs over the years. So when you see ‘em, It’s not like I forget the songs, I just forget about ‘em, and when you see ‘em, you remember ‘em and you kind of remember the situation behind ‘em. I know that a lot of ‘em too, we considered them for singles and for just some reason, we picked something else. It was not that hard to pick ‘em really after I looked through ‘em because, I don’t know, there are just so many that are my favorites, and I’ll probably have to reconsider my shows now and go back and incorporate [other songs]. I’ve been trying to do that lately, though, try to go back and get old stuff.”
