• CHRISTMAS 2019: Mickey Guyton

Mickey Guyton usually goes home to Texas for Christmas every year, and the thing that has to be on the dinner table is her mom’s Italian Cream Cake, which is also a staple at Thanksgiving.

“My mom makes this homemade, from scratch, Italian Cream Cake. It’s so freaking good, and every Christmas and every Thanksgiving, she makes this,” says Mickey. “Our families all come to my parents’ house, and we have a big dinner, and that’s the first thing that to go. That’s like the first thing that people eat the most.”

The songstress released her version of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” from the smash hit, Frozen, a few years ago. She says it, along with a classic, are her favorite holiday songs. “My favorite Christmas song is ‘O Holy Night,’ but I really love ‘Do You Want to Build a Snowman.’ So, both of those are like my all-time favorite.”

We just pretended like we were the Wise Men. We did the story of the birth of Jesus, and we filmed it. It was just a really cool memory for me.”

“I love this song, and it’s an emotional song. It’s a story about a love between two sisters, and I just think it’s really cool that I get to do this song. I told my sister that I was doing it, and I sent her a copy of it and all of her kids – she’s a teacher – so all of her kids just love this song. When I walk through the hall, they’re like ‘Frozen!’ And I’m like, that’s right. I love that movie. I really, really do.”

  • THANKSGIVING 2019: Artist Audio

The Thanksgiving holiday tradition traces its origins to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth, in the state that’s now known as Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. While initially, the Plymouth colony did not have enough food to feed half of the 102 colonists, the Wampanoag Native Americans helped the Pilgrims by providing seeds and teaching them to fish. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s. People now celebrate the holiday by giving thanks for their blessings over the past year, as well as feasting on turkey and other festive goodies.

Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 28th, and most people will be enjoying time with their friends and families, including some of your favorite country stars, such as Adam Hambrick, Alan Jackson, Brandon Lay, Carrie Underwood, Caylee Hammack, Clare Dunn, Darius Rucker, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Jon Langston, Jordan Davis, Josh Turner, Keith Urban, Kip Moore, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Maddie & Tae, Mickey Guyton, Sam Hunt, Travis Denning and more. They share their thoughts, memories and favorite Thanksgiving dishes.

Brothers Osborne, who usually have their annual Misfits Thanksgiving dinner, are set to perform this year during halftime of the Detroit Lions 80th Thanksgiving Day Classic on Thursday, November 28th. The performance will be televised as part of FOX’s coverage of the game starting at 12:30pm ET/9:30am PT.

Audio / Adam Hambrick says he’s very thankful to his family.

Adam Hambrick (Thanksgiving) OC: …I was raised. :32
“I know this sounds very cheesy, but I am very thankful for my family. A lot of the good things that have happened in my life are just a result of being raised in a family with two parents that love each other, with sisters that I love and being raised in a community of people, even outside of my family, that’s just a lot of love and a lot of care. Those are the things that raise a person up to be successful, and I am a success because of the way I was raised.”

Audio / Adam Hambrick says his Grandfather’s turkey and dressing and a special side dish signals Thanksgiving.

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish would be the homemade dressin’ that we, cornbread-based kind of dressin’ that we always have with turkey. That recipe is a kind of a combination of my mama, and Denise has taken it and perfected it over the years, so that me and my children really enjoy it.”

Audio / Carrie Underwood says she and her family don’t have too many Thanksgiving traditions.

“We don’t have too many set-in-stone Thanksgiving traditions. I find myself a lot of times working on or around Thanksgiving or unable to get home or whatever. We try to be together, but sometimes that just doesn’t work out. But yeah, I mean, I think it’s just about we eat. I eat a lot every year on Thanksgiving. [laughs] I never skip THAT tradition. But yeah, that’s the gist of it, and I’m kind of lucky. I get two Thanksgivings, because I also get to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with my husband’s family, so if I don’t hit one, I’ll definitely be able to get the other one.”

Audio / Carrie Underwood says she’s thankful for her family, which has grown by one this year, as well as her fans, her health and her recent Cry Pretty Tour 360.

“My list of things I’m thankful for is too vast. First and foremost, my family. We had a baby earlier this year, which is crazy to think about all of the things that we’ve done and thinking about starting off this year pregnant and having a baby and all of the places that he’s already seen. I’m thankful for health and we’ve had safety along all of our travels. Of course, I’m thankful for the tour and I’m thankful to the fans that have come out to see us. There’s a lot to be thankful for. God has blessed us with some incredible stuff and hopefully we’ve done good with what we’ve been blessed with.”

Audio / Caylee Hammack says Thanksgiving is her favorite holiday, because she gets to just spend time with her family.

We all sit around and just eat all day. And I love Thanksgiving because you don’t have to worry about getting gifts for people; you don’t have to worry about wrapping them. You just show up and you eat all day with the people you love. So, I absolutely love Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday.”

It’s hanging out with family and getting some great food, ‘cause that’s really what Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for all of the great things you’ve got, and I always give thanks for the greatest thing I’ve got and that’s my family.”

Audio / Dierks Bentley, who is thankful for his wife, two daughters and son, talks about his Thanksgiving must-have! It’s an oldie, but a goodie!

“You gotta have a big turkey. Thanksgiving is not possible without a turkey. We cook it traditionally, but when we’re in, a couple of Thanksgivings ago, we were here in Nashville, we did the whole fry the turkey up, and it was great. It just tasted so good; all those juices get locked in there, and I love that too. You really can’t, to me, cook a turkey wrong. I’m gonna eat it any way, and I have over the years. Trust me, I’ve played a lot of county and state fairs, where I’ve seen gigantic turkey legs, you know, I’ve had the flat meat. I’ve done turkey every way you could do it. I’m pretty good any way you want to cook it up, but you’ve got to have a turkey for Thanksgiving.”

I’m thankful for what the fans have done. I mean there’s a lot of stuff to be thankful for in that regard. And I’m thankful that I was given the opportunity to do it my own way. I’m thankful that I’m going to get to keep doing this and do it the way that I want to do it.”

It was a big deal in high school if you had practice on Thanksgiving Day because you made third round of the playoffs. So, in high school we always had practice on Thanksgiving, so I guess that was pretty cool. Everybody’s waking up on a cold Thanksgiving morning going to football practice, but yeah, pretty cool.”

“Uh, deviled eggs! [laughs] Where I’m from in South Carolina, I don’t think I’ve tasted a bad deviled egg. It’s like everybody has their own twist on it, but they’re all good, but I always loved it when my mama made ‘em. I’m learning as I get older, making deviled eggs is no easy task. It’s more complicated than it looks, and so that’s probably why I never made ‘em myself.” [laughs]

Audio / Josh Turner explains what he enjoys about the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Josh Turner (holidays) OC: …the peace and quiet. :38
“I love being outside in nature and the outdoors, and the holidays is a great time for me to go and partake in that part of my life. A lot of times, Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s a little cold to go fishing, but when it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s a great time to go hunting, especially in South Carolina, that’s when the temperatures are starting to drop and the conditions are getting right, and especially in November, kind of the tail end of the rut, as far as deer season. So, it’s a good time to get in the deer stand whether you kill anything or not, it’s just a great time to just get away from everything and get away from the noise and the lights and the diesel fumes [laughs] and just relax and just enjoy the peace and quiet.”

Audio / Keith Urban gives thanks for many things, including his wife and two daughters.

And from there, we created life, and that’s just beautiful, absolutely beautiful. And the effect that all of that has had in my work, has given life to it too, given it a sense of purpose and really deepened the experience for me.”

It’s just all about quality time and I love quality time. My favorite dish is some broccoli-cheese casserole and Tae’s favorite dish, I know, is cranberry sauce, just plain. Just plain ole cranberry sauce, no turkey, just cranberry sauce.” TAE: “She knows.” MADDIE: “That’s it.” TAE: “I genuinely feel there’s something wrong with me. (MADDIE: “Out of the can.”) out of the can. My parents know just to have cranberry sauce for me, like no one else can touch it. There’s a home video where my brother Mason tries to eat it, and I’m like, ‘What are you doing? This is mine.’” MADDIE: “She eats it out of the can.” TAE: “I do.”

I’m just saying. So, that’s one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions.”

I mean, it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it’s sweet. My mom actually makes an Italian cream cake that’s absolutely awesome. It’s homemade, and the entire family, that’s the first thing to go at Thanksgiving dinner. And my Grandma D, she makes a pecan pie that is awesome. She taught me how to make them when I was little, and I just love them, and that’s the other thing that I look forward to at Thanksgiving dinner, and I love them both so much!”

Audio / Travis Denning says Thanksgiving is one of his favorite times of the year.

“Thanksgiving actually is probably one of my favorite moments of the year, and the reason is actually because just about every Friday after Thanksgiving, I would play a small acoustic show at this bar in my hometown and it’s always so much fun. So many of my old friends come and it’s packed and it’s super loose and super fun and everybody’s just enjoying it. I might play three of my songs, and then I just try to figure out how many old country songs I can sing. That’s so fun, because you’re coming off spending so much time with your family and then you get this little time to go spend with your friends. I think it’s just great because you get to knock out so much like reconnecting and fellowship. I love Thanksgiving.”

  • MICKEY GUYTON RELEASES STUNNING VIDEO FOR HER SONG, “SISTER.”

Capitol Records Nashville’s Mickey Guyton released the stunning video for her female support and solidarity song “Sister.”   Mickey worked with video director Chelsea Thompson on the concept as well as the casting of six of Mickey’s “sisters.”

“It was so important to me to not only feature some of my dearest friends in this video, but to represent all types of ‘sisters’ so when women watch this video, they see someone who looks like them,” shares Mickey. “It is more important than ever to show diversity and that Country music is for everyone.”

“Sister,” co-written by Mickey, Nathan Spicer and Victoria Banks and produced by Forest Glen Whitehead is the first song from a period of introspection and inspiration for Guyton.  Currently in the studio with Forest, Mickey is working on more new music.

Mickey shares what is so special about the “Sister” video cast:

Amara Hall (@AmaraGiveLove):  “Amara is stunning, but what makes her so special is the movement she has created called, Safe Place Poetry Circle.  She gives incarcerated women a safe place to share their truths, be broken, and learn wholeness together through poetry.  I met her a few years back when I was playing in a City of Hope softball game.  I was having a terrible day and Amara came up to me and it literally felt as if the sun was shining on me.  She has such positive energy and unknowingly lifted my spirits.  She showed me love when I needed it the most and that moment stuck with me because ‘Sister’ is about the women who have always had my back.”

Harper Grae (@HarperGraeMusic):  “Harper Grae is a fellow Country music singer and songwriter with an incredible voice, but what sets her apart is her heart.  There is the common assumption that two female artists can’t be friends because they are in competition, but this girl was helping build the set for this music video! She lives every word of “Sister’ every day and represents love and acceptance.”

Kate Bowen (@KateBowenSongs):  “Kate Bowen is an incredible singer and songwriter who I have been so lucky to write with. She is an old soul and when I’m around her, it just feels like everything is going to be alright.  No matter what I’ve gone through over the years, she was always there for me and embodies everything that a ‘sister’ is. I’m not one to share my feelings when bad things are happening in my life.  I usually keep it to myself until I get to the other side, but with Kate I am always able to open up and have her help me through.”

Venus Knight (@VenusKnight3):  “Venus is a queen, but what is so amazing about her is her kind heart.  She is a behavioral counselor and aids the most challenging clients that very few are willing to work with and saves them from going into mental institutions.  When we met, we bonded immediately because we have both lived our lives feeling like we are on the outside. Through her personal adversity she has compassion for everyone.”

Lisa Goe (@LisaGoeGo):  “Lisa is an amazing pop singer and songwriter.  She runs the company Popoff Nashville which allows pop artists and writers to be seen, heard and validated. I met Lisa when I was on tour with Brad Paisley.  We met at a party where I knew no one.  What people don’t know about me is that I’m quite introverted especially when I don’t know anyone. Lisa sensed how terrified I was and walked up to me with this bright and larger than life personality.  She immediately made me feel included.”

Julia Ukwu (@Drops.ofJules):  “Of the ‘sisters’ in this video, I have known Julia the longest.  We met when I was still working in Los Angeles and Julia was visiting from Nashville.  When I decided to move to Nashville and pursue my dream of writing and performing Country music, Julia was one of my biggest supporters.  She was with me every step of the way during that scary yet exciting time in my life.”

In April her song “Hold On” which she co-wrote with Karen Kosowski and Victoria Banks is featured the major motion picture BREAKTHROUGH starring Chrissy Metz (This Is Us).  The poignant and uplifting song was written and recorded in less than 24 hours after Mickey received a summary of a scene in the film.  At this year’s ACM Awards, Mickey performed alongside Metz, Carrie Underwood, Lauren Alaina and Maddie & Tae, the song “I’m Standing With You” also from the BREAKTHROUGH movie soundtrack.

Mickey has been featured on CBS This Morning, ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today Show.  She has also been spotlighted in PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Rolling Stone & Billboard.

  • MICKEY GUYTON BARES SOUL WITH NEW MUSIC.

Mickey Guyton has been on a soul-searching journey the last few years focusing on her songwriting.  “Sister,” co-written by Mickey, Nathan Spicer and Victoria Banks is the first song from this period of introspection and inspiration.  Produced by Forest Glen Whitehead (Kelsea Ballerina), “Sister” is an anthem for female support and solidarity.

“Sisterhood is truly what gets me through every day,” explains Mickey.  “I have two sisters but anyone who knows me, knows I call all the women in my life sister.  I wrote this song during a time when I challenged myself to write more honestly, be more open about my feelings, and reflect on how I’ve been uplifted by so many women in my life.  ‘Sister’ is about my love relationship with all my sisters, and how we lean on each other through highs and lows.”

Mickey Guyton (Sister) 1 OC: …my sisters. :56
“I really wanted to write a song about my sisters, and if anybody knows me, I call people my sister. I have two sisters of my own, and anytime I talk to someone, like you’re my sister. I wanted to write something that really happens. The words are, ‘Sister, I’ve got your back on a long drunk stumble home.’ I can’t tell you how many times my girlfriends, or even my sisters have picked up the phone needing me at like two o’clock in the morning and vice versa for me. I go over there, pick them up, help them, whatever it is. And I just felt like it was so important to show women relationships – sisterhood – because it is truly what gets us through every day. We have our own romantic relationships, but there is nothing like your sisters; there’s nothing like your relationship with your girlfriends. There’s just nothing like it. This song really is just about that – it’s my love relationship with my sisters.”

Mickey Guyton (Chrissy Metz) OC: …really say. :40
“I absolutely love Chrissy Metz. This is Us is literally one of my favorite shows. When it first came out, I was literally crying on every freaking episode thanks to Chrissy Metz. And then being able to meet her, she is just literally such a gem, and what’s even more special to me is I didn’t even know she was a part of the film when I wrote the song. I didn’t know who was in the film, and that was just a plus for me. And again, yet another blessing. This film is the gift that keeps on giving to me. And just to be a part of it and be around her and, it’s, I’m obsessed with her is all I can really say.”

  • MICKEY GUYTON’S “HOLD ON” REVEALED AS NEXT AVAILABLE TRACK FROM STAR-STUDDED BREAKTHROUGH MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.

The recently announced star-studded album Breakthrough, music from and inspired by the highly-anticipated motion picture, is due April 5th on Mercury Nashville. With the pre-order, fans immediately receive “I’m Standing With You,” performed by lead actor Chrissy Metz, and now, also receive “Hold On,” co-written and performed by Mickey Guyton; both songs playing prominent roles in the feature film. Pre-order the album HERE.

“Hold On,” written by Mickey, Karen Kosowski, and Victoria Banks, is the first of new music to come from the Texas native.  Named as one of Country music’s “female game changers” by Billboard magazine, Mickey has been writing and recording new music this last year.

“Honestly, it was a God moment that this even happened,” shares Mickey.  “We had a brief synopsis of a scene in the movie, and 24 hours to turn in a song.  We took inspiration from the story, and our own personal experiences, and “Hold On” came together quickly.  I just feel so honored to be part of this film.  Chrissy Metz is magical and did an amazing job showing the love of a mother for her child.”

The soundtrack includes all original music and recordings from Adam Hambrick, Carrie Underwood, Chrissy Metz, Darius Rucker, Jukebox the Ghost, Lauren Alaina, Maddie & Tae, Mickey Guyton, Phil Wickham, Pigeon John, and Taylor Mosby plus special featured guests Kirk Franklin and Lecrae.

This soundtrack comes just ahead of Twentieth Century Fox’s April 17th release of the feature film Breakthrough. The movie, starring Chrissy Metz (This is Us), Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama), Topher Grace (That 70s Show), Sam Trammell (True Blood) and Dennis Haysbert (MAjor League 24, Allstate commercials), is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love and faith in the face of impossible odds. Audio / Mickey Guyton explains how she and her co-writers came up with the song "Hold On," which is featured in the film, Breakthrough.

Mickey Guyton (Hold On inspiration) OC: …came about. 1:13
“So, I had a meeting with my label telling them that I wanted to start writing for film and television. It’s just something I really wanted to do. And six months later, I’d got an email from them briefing me about a movie called Breakthrough and they needed a song for a specific scene. I knew nothing of the story, only that a kid fell through ice and wasn’t expected to make it through the night, and they needed a song specifically for that scene. All I kept thinking to myself I don’t have children, but what would I tell my child if I didn’t think they were going to make it. I happened to be writing with a woman that had two children. Her name is Victoria Banks, and I asked her, I said, ‘Victoria, what would you tell your daughters if you didn’t think that they were gonna survive the night?’ And she was like, ‘I would tell them to hold on.’ And that’s exactly where we wrote the song from, and we wrote the song basically as a prayer, because when you think that someone you love isn’t going to make it, the first thing you want to do is get on your knees and pray and let them know that you’re here and hold on to me. And that’s how it came about.”

Audio / Mickey Guyton felt overwhelmed when she heard her song “Hold On” in the new Breakthrough film.

    Download

Mickey Guyton (Hold on in the film) OC: …it’s crazy. :29
“When I heard ‘Hold On’ in the film, it was such a crazy, almost weird feeling. You hear your voice there and you’re like ‘Okay, that’s me.’ [laughs] and I didn’t exactly know how to feel about it. I love This Is Us and I see Chrissy Metz on the screen and then I hear my song in the background, and it was a really cool feeling and weird. I really felt weird. I just didn’t feel like it was me. It’s crazy.”

    ABOUT BREAKTHROUGH
BREAKTHROUGH is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven) and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own book, BREAKTHROUGH, directed by Roxann Dawson, is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.
