  • BRANDON LAY RELEASES INFECTIOUS NEW SONG, “STILL ROCK & ROLL.”

Brandon Lay recently released a new song, “Still Rock & Roll,” that he’s been playing during his live shows and getting a great response from fans, especially with the infectious sing-along aspect of the tune. He co-wrote “Still Rock & Roll” with J.T. Harding and Shane McAnally, and the Tennessee native is excited to perform it when he hits the road with Brantley Gilbert in January on the Fire’T Up Tour.

“There’s a very passionate kind of spark that happens, I think it’s just a quick moment in time, when you run into someone you haven’t seen in a long time, it’s almost like looking in a mirror for a second,” says Brandon. “So, that’s kind of what the song embodies in a rock and roll sort of way, and those were always my favorite kind of songs, and I just hope people can relate to ‘em. The whole vibe of the song, the nostalgia and the sound of it, definitely fits that big impact arena song that I’ve been going for.”

The Fire’T Up Tour 2020 kicks off January 23rd north of the border in London, Canada.

In other news, Brandon also recently found out his anthemic song “Speakers, Bleachers, Preachers” was just certified gold in Canada.

“‘Still Rock & Roll’ was a song I wrote with J.T. Harding and Shane McAnally, and it’s a song that we have actually played live in my live show for quite some time. We wrote it quite a while back but recording it in the studio, it just never seemed to pay off the way it did live. So, it actually took 3 or 4, I think it took 4 tries in the studio to get it where we wanted it and where we felt like it was matching the energy we had in our live show. There’s a very passionate kind of spark that happens, I think it’s just a quick moment in time, when you run into someone you haven’t seen in a long time, it’s almost like looking in a mirror for a second. So, that’s kind of what the song embodies in a rock and roll sort of way, and those were always my favorite kind of songs, and I just hope people can relate to ‘em. And so, I’m just glad to have it out and hope people can identify with it.”

  • LAUREN ALAINA DANCES THE FOXTROT INTO THE HEARTS OF MILLIONS ON DANCING WITH THE STARS (brown bag interview).

Lauren Alaina and her partner Gleb Savchenko twirled their way to a score of 32 out of 40 points for their dreamy, floating Foxtrot during Monday night’s (October 7th) episode of Dancing with the Stars. Former NBA star, Lamar Odom came in last place last night and was eliminated from the competition.

Lauren had an emotional week after flying to Nashville with Gleb and performing at the legendary Tootsies on the famous Broadway. She learned her cousin Holly, who she describes as more like a sister to her, was in a coma following surgery for a brain bleed. While she still hasn’t “woken up” from the coma, she is responding in subtle ways to the doctors.

Next week is Disney Week, so we’re sure Lauren will dazzle as one of the beautiful princesses. In the meantime, make sure to tune in to Dancing With the Stars on Monday (October 7th) at 8pm ET/7pm CT on ABC…AND don’t forget to ADD her new single, “Getting Good.”

  • CARRIE UNDERWOOD SCORES HER 27TH NO. 1 SINGLE WITH “SOUTHBOUND.”

Carrie Underwood just hit the top of the Mediabase/Country Aircheck country chart with “Southbound,” which is her 27th career No. 1, and her 14th chart-topper she hand a hand in writing. She co-wrote the song, the latest from her No. 1 debuting album Cry Pretty, with her producer David Garcia, as well as collaborator Josh Miller.

“’Southbound’ started out late in the game. I actually already had a lot of the album already music was done. I was putting my vocals on it. We were kind of tweaking stuff and doing all of our producer stuff on it, trying to put some extra magic on it. And at the end of making an album you start thinking what are we lacking? What do we need? So, we get in a room and I had the title. I was like this sounds like fun, I think. We can do something fun with this,” says Carrie. ”It surprisingly took us a while to write it but by the end of it, it was like, ‘Well, this is a lot of fun.’ I feel like everybody kind of gravitated towards that one when we were all done with it.”

Carrie continues The Cry Pretty Tour 360 with Maddie & Tae and Runaway June on Wednesday (October 9th) at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Audio / Carrie Underwood talks about the song “Southbound,” which she co-wrote with David Garcia and Josh Miller and was one of the last songs recorded for her new album, Cry Pretty.

Well, ‘Southbound’ started out late in the game. We can do something fun with this. But then you realize how tricky for some reason it is to be a woman and write like kind of a drinking party boat song. It’s strange. You wouldn’t think it would be any different, but I’m like for some reason I feel like a guy could get away with saying this line that we just threw out there, but I can’t for some reason. And I used Katie in the song as an example. So, Katie, we wanted to make her like have a little too much fun, but for every line we came out with it was like well we don’t want her to be like – we don’t want it to be sad. We still had to make Katie have a little respect but wanted to just get it out there that some people were having too much fun. It surprisingly took us a while to write it but by the end of it, it was like, ‘Well, this is a lot of fun.’ I feel like everybody kind of gravitated towards that one when we were all done with it.”

  • MADDIE AND TAE’S MADDIE MARLOW RECEIVING A LOT OF WEDDING PLANNING ASSISTANCE FROM HER HUSBAND-TO-BE.

Maddie and Tae‘s Maddie Marlow has been getting help from her husband-to-be on planning their upcoming nuptials, and says Jonah (Font) has been a huge help to her, along with her wedding planner, which she says has made the process much easier and less stressful.

“He, like overall, he just takes it. He’ll be like, ‘I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry.’ But we did this together. We did a lot of the (planning). We really had a blast, like everyone says, ‘It’s gonna be so stressful,’ and it was before we had a wedding planner. So, my suggestion to all brides is to get a wedding planner, ‘cause we had fun, right? (Jonah agrees off-mic) Like the catering thing was so awesome, and they sent us a gigantic to-go box of food, all of the food that we didn’t eat, so we had leftovers for like three days and it was delicious. So, yeah, it’s been really, really good.”

Maddie & Tae, who are on the road with Carrie Underwood, are making their way up the country charts with “Die From a Broken Heart.” The ladies are also releasing their new EP, Everywhere I’m Goin’, on Friday (October 18th).

  • ERIC CHURCH GIVES FANS MEMORABLE MOMENTS.

Eric Church, as you know by now, is all about giving his fans something memorable in concert and also about challenging himself. He’s proven it over and over, especially with his last two tours – Holdin’ My Own Tour a few years ago and this year’s Double Down Tour, performing over three-and-a-half hours (sometimes four) without an opening act.

When it came time to perform at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium for this year’s CMA Music Fest in June, he wanted to give fans something different and special than what he did just a couple of weeks earlier after setting an attendance record at the sold-out stadium show with no opening act. He returned to the venue with just him and his acoustic guitar and launched into an extended medley of 17 songs. He took the popular medley of hit songs and covers, under the opus of his song “Mistress Named Music,” during his regular Double Down Tour shows and decided to cover himself with a nearly half-hour medley…and it ended up being one of his favorite performances of his entire career.

“I never go into a show thinking about anything other than what will make this something for the people that are here they won’t forget it and they’ll never get to see it again,” says Eric. “I think the Nissan Stadium show was that; I think the CMA Fest show was that. One of my favorite performances of my career was that CMA Fest show.”

Some of the songs he covered included his most recent No. 1 “Some of It,” as well as “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag,” “Sinners Like Me,” “Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Record Year,” “Homeboy,” “Talladega,” “My Hometown,” “Cold One,” “Desperate Man,” “Creepin’,” “Springsteen” and “Mistress Named Music,” among others.

“I was having a bit of a brain thing where we just played Nissan and set the record, and in my opinion, the best show of our career, and then I’m back three weeks later, and I’ve got to figure out how to do something that’s gonna be memorable again,” says the North Carolina native. “That was the hardest thing earlier in the day. I started working on it – I could do this. I could do that. I thought about doing all covers. I thought about just changing it up completely. I went through all these things in my head, and finally decided that probably the best avenue, the best path was me just to go out and play ‘Mistress (Named Music)’ like I was gonna play a bunch of the stuff – that had taken on its own form during the tour, people knew about it, it’d become popular, they probably thought I was gonna do ‘Piano Man.’ And then to go in and cover myself for those 17 songs, I thought, as it grew and as I kept going, it’d be a really neat thing. The fun thing for me was during the day was figuring out, ‘How can I play for 30 minutes and not stop’ – and that was my set time – ‘…can I pull all that off and then get back to Mistress at the end?’  So, I had a lot of fun just trying to figure that out. That was a challenge, and I love stuff like that.”

He worked on it, with a stopwatch, that whole afternoon. He even sent his band home so he wouldn’t fall back on them.

” I was by myself. I didn’t let anybody know. At this point in time, nobody knew. And I was working on it, working on it, and I wasn’t sure it could happen. I’d think, ‘Eh,’ and I’d go back up and think about it for a minute, and go, ‘Eh.’ My fallback is I’m just gonna play five songs, and I’d go ba ck and work on it again. Finally I thought, ‘I can do this. This is gonna be, it’s gonna be something. It’s gonna be ballsy.’ (laughs) I went and told the band, ‘The best thing that can happen is you guys leave, because if you’re still here, there’s a chance I’ll go back and do the other. I need you to go home and then I’m on my own.’ And then I told ‘em what I was doing, and they thought it was cool. I think that’ll be neat. So, they all grabbed their bags and got in their cars and they left. So, at that point in time, we’re about an hour before the show and the band’s gone. The bus is empty.”

Eric, who is making his mark on the country charts again with his latest “Monsters,” is nominated for three CMA Awards this year. He’s up for Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year for Desperate Man and Music Video of the Year. The 52nd annual CMA Awards will broadcast live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena November 13th at 8pm ET.

Audio / Eric Church says two of his most memorable shows this year were his sold-out Nissan Stadium show and his performance during CMA Music Fest.
