Brothers Osborne recorded a very cool version of the 1970 Elton John-Bernie Taupin song, “Take Me to the Pilot” for the new star-studded compilation, Restoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The collection, which also features Little Big Town, Kacey Musgraves, Dierks Bentley, Chris Stapleton, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson and many others, came out on Friday (April 6th).

The boys nearly recorded another one of Elton’s hits, but decided that “Take Me to the Pilot” would be the best fit; a song they could have easily seen themselves record, even if the collection wasn’t part of the equation.

“If you go back and listen to a lot of Elton’s early material, it sounds like some grooving, almost rock-country tunes, and ‘Take Me to the Pilot,’ sounds like a song we could’ve easily have recorded,” says John Osborne.

“We were listening to songs of Elton’s that we thought would be great to do, and some of the songs we were just big fans of, but we realized we probably weren’t the best artist or band to recreate it,” says TJ Osborne. “Then we were listening to ‘Take Me to the Pilot,’ and we thought man, this is something that we probably would’ve wanted to cover and record anyways, regardless of it being on the Restoration project and so we did. I’m pretty proud with how it turned out.”

Brothers Osborne, who are nominated for two ACM Awards (Vocal Duo and Music Video of the Year for “It Ain’t My Fault”), are set to release their brand-new album, Port Saint Joe, on April 20th. They’re currently making their way up the country charts with “Shoot Me Straight.”

Restoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin was been released, and it features interpretations of some of Elton’s biggest hits by country artists. The collection features Little Big Town (“Rocket Man”), Chris Stapleton (“I Want Love”), Dierks Bentley (“Sad Songs (Say So Much)”), Kacey Musgraves (“Roy Rogers”), Brothers Osborne (“Take Me to the Pilot”), Vince Gill and Don Henley (“Sacrifice”), Lee Ann Womack (“Honkycat”) and many more. A pop compilaton, Revamp, was also released, including such artists as Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Pink, Sam Smith, Demi Lovato and Coldplay.

Composer/Songwriter Bernie Taupin, who also created the album cover art, felt like a “kid in a candy store” working on the country version. “This has just been a joy because it’s like I’m a kid in a candy store, because I get to work and be around people that are not only friends but people that I respect tremendously,” says Bernie. “And then new artists are thrown into the mix, the best of the new artists I might add. I mean we’ve got so much talent on this album it’s frightening.”

In celebration of Elton John and his 50 years of making music, CBS will air a tribute special, Elton John: I’m Still Standing – A Grammy Salute on Tuesday (April 10th) at 9pm ET. Several artists, including Little Big Town, Maren Morris and Miranda Lambert will sing classic Elton John songs during the show. John Legend, Miley Cyrus, Kesha and many others are also performing.

Vince Gill and Don Henley recorded “Sacrifice” for the new compilation album Restoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The song, written by Sir Elton and Bernie, appears on the 1989 album Sleeping with the Past. It was first released in October 1989, then in 1990, and was the second single from the album.

The collection, also featuring Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town, Dierks Bentley, Brothers Osborne, Kacey Musgraves and Lee Ann Womack, among others, is available now.

Kacey Musgraves recorded “Roy Rogers,” which is featured on the new compilation Restoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The song, written by Sir Elton and Bernie, was featured on the 1973 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album.

The collection, also featuring Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town, Dierks Bentley, Brothers Osborne, Vince Gill and Don Henley, among others, is available now.
