Rock and Roll pioneer and colorful musician Jerry Lee Lewis passed away on Friday (October 28th) in DeSoto, Mississippi at the age of 87. Nicknamed “The Killer,” his 1957 hit “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” gave Jerry Lee global fame and followed with hits “Great Balls Of Fire” and “Breathless.”
Darius Rucker told us he had the opportunity to meet the Rockabilly legend and it was a moment he’ll never forget. “I got to meet Jerry Lee once, and it was one of the great nights of my life, sitting having drinks with Jerry Lee Lewis,” he recalled. “He was one of the funniest people I’ve ever been around and what he did for music. Jerry Lee did it his way, and that’s all that mattered to him. And the great thing is he did it his way and he was a legend. The Killer’s gonna be missed, man. That’s really sad.”
Public memorial services for Jerry Lee Lewis will be held this weekend in Hernando, Mississippi and his birthplace, Ferriday, Louisiana. The officiate for the funeral service on Saturday will be Lewis’ cousin, Reverend Jimmy Swaggart along with Ferriday’s Clyde Ray Webber. There will be a live stream option for those not able to travel which will be announced soon via Lewis’ Facebook page.
