THIS DAY IN HISTORY: July 24th

On July 24th, 2010, Luke Bryan’s “Rain is a Good Thing” climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Chart. The Georgia native, a son of a peanut farmer, co-wrote the tune with his dear friend Dallas Davidson (“Country Girl,” “That’s My Kind of Night,” “All About Tonight,” “Gimme That Girl”), based on a saying they’d have back in college.

Rain makes corn/corn makes whiskey/whiskey makes my baby/feel a little frisky.”

“The song came about from strictly an old saying that me and my co-writer [Dallas Davidson] in college, we’d have something planned and we’d get bummed out by the rain,” says Luke. “We’d be like, ‘Well, rain makes corn, corn makes whiskey,” and we’d never even said the frisky line. We actually made that up in the writing session.”

Luke hits the festival circuit this week with a date during Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming on Wednesday (July 26th), followed by a show Friday (July 28th) in Central Point, Oregon and a performance during the Mountain Home Music Festival on Saturday (July 29th).

Shania discusses being the sole songwriter of her new music, “I’m a songwriter first. That absolutely drives everything. It was a big step toward independence. I pushed myself, knowing it was going to scare me and knowing that I, alone, was responsible for however it turned out. I love collaborating, but I didn’t want any emotional, psychological, or musical influence. The minute you invite somebody into that space, you’re influenced. And then it wouldn’t be me. KIP MOORE REVEALS THE COVER FOR HIS UPCOMING THIRD ALBUM, SLOWHEART.

KM Slowheart

Kip Moore revealed the cover for his upcoming third studio album SLOWHEART, available Sept. 8.  Moore, who was inspired to name the release after his fiercely loyal fans who have adopted the name SLOWHEART themselves and who “defines himself by his honesty, which feeds directly into his music, which earned him a fan base of die-hards and helped make him a breakout star in Nashville,” (Washington Post) gave fans the opportunity to view and share the album cover first via social media. The cover image, taken in Costa Rica during Kip’s extended break earlier this year, speaks to the personal nature of the collection which Rolling Stone praises for its “gut-punch of a vintage album, the vocals out front and clear as crystal.”

“My former guitar player called me a ‘slowheart’ many years ago, claiming I don’t just jump the gun and show all my cards or my emotions on what I truly feel,” said Moore. “He always said ‘you’re a slowheart, man…you observe before you act.’ I eventually named the band the slowhearts, and my fans are the slowhearts too. And so, its only fitting that the record I’ve been waiting to make, was named SLOWHEART.”

Co-written by Moore, his current Top 15 single and the lead track “More Girls Like You,” is the fastest rising single of his career so far and is receiving praise from critics such as Entertainment Weekly declaring he “has made a name for himself weaving vignettes of Southern, blue-collar life and love into rollicking country anthems.” As he “consistently serves up clever roots-rock riffs and rhythms that separate Moore from the rock-meets-rap focus of his Nashville peers” (Associated Press), the release of “More Girls Like You” follows the acclaim that surrounded his sophomore album WILD ONES heralded as “an impressively singular release from Music Row” by The Guardian. Moore first turned heads with his debut album UP ALL NIGHT which was certified GOLD by the RIAA and spawned three No. One hit singles including GOLD certified “Beer Money,” PLATINUM certified “Hey Pretty Girl,” and the DOUBLE PLATINUM breakout hit “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck. Following an extended break, Moore is back out on the road playing some of country music’s biggest festivals this year, as well as headlining dates in U.K this fall stopping in Birmingham, UK (10/2), Manchester, UK (10/3), Glasgow, UK (10/4) and culminating in a special show as part of Country Music Week in London, UK at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 10/6. Moore will also return to Ireland later this summer for Harvest 2017, stopping in Westport, IE (8/26) and Enniskillen, IE (8/27.) NEWCOMER BRANDON LAY RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE.

New EMI Nashville recording artist Brandon Lay just released his debut single, “Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers,” and the song is based on how he grew up in West Tennessee.

“Growing up in Jackson, Tennessee, my life revolved around playing sports and going to church,” says Brandon. “Country music was always coming through the speakers, and my mom had great taste in music. She was a school teacher, and I grew up a preacher’s kid. My dad was in the ministry. We were in church or school every time the doors were open and when we weren’t doing that, life kind of revolved around sports – football, baseball, basketball.”

Brandon debuted 2-pack of songs called SPEAKERS was released to streaming platforms on July 7th. We were in church or school every time the doors were open and when we weren’t doing that, life kind of revolved around sports – football, baseball, basketball. One piece of advice that stuck with me that my dad gave to me was to write your own book, and when I moved to Nashville, I think it could’ve been very tempting to follow a trend or follow a crowd and just try to be like other guys. That’s something that’s always stuck with me and I’m grateful for, because I think being the best you is pretty good advice, no matter what field you’re in.”

KEITH URBAN IS BACK IN THE STUDIO WORKING ON NEW MUSIC.

Keith Urban shared some news with his fans on Wednesday (July 19th). He posted a photo of a soundboard and tagged it “Back in the Studio.” He’s started work on the follow-up to his current album, Ripcord, which was released in 2016 and possibly includes a few new strategies of creating music.

Keith, who is currently making his way up to the top of the country charts with his latest single “The Fighter” featuring Carrie Underwood, says making an album for him is a relatively organic process. “[I like to] get in the studio and I want to feel just really enraptured with a song to get in there and figure it out with the band and watch it sort of blossom.” He adds, “After we’ve recorded them all, it seems apparent which ones should make it to the record, which ones should be bonus tracks and figuring out the sequencing.”

Keith will hit the stage in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan Thursday (July 19th) and Twin Lakes, Wisconsin on Friday.

Keith Urban (album process) OC: …out the sequencing. :39
“It always seems to be a fairly organic process; get in the studio and I want to feel just really enraptured with a song to get in there and figure it out with the band and watch it sort of blossom. They don’t always do that and it’s usually very, very quickly that I can tell it’s just not working. But having said that, I don’t always know. That’s why the song has a way of becoming and being a part of it, and after we’ve recorded them all, it seems apparent which ones should make it to the record, which ones should be bonus tracks and figuring out the sequencing.”

BROTHERS OSBORNE HIT THE BEACH TO RECORD THEIR NEXT ALBUM.

Brothers Osborne have been catching some rays as they’ve been working in the studio on the follow-up to their debut album, Pawn Shop.

“So, we went down to Florida, just to get out of Nashville and kinda clear our heads a little bit, with Jay Joyce our producer, and we shacked up in a beach house. You know, we intended on maybe leaving with anywhere between six to eight songs, and we ended up recording 11 songs,” says John Osborne. “I can’t come out and say that we’ve finished our record, but we got pretty damn close if we didn’t finish.”

John goes on to say that he really likes the new music and can’t wait for the fans to hear it. “I feel very, very, very good about this record that we did. And I know everyone says that about their new music and that’s cliché or whatever. I actually really like our record! And man, I can’t wait to play it for everybody.”

Brothers Osborne are sitting inside the Top 15 on the country charts with their latest hit, “It Ain’t My Fault.” The guys hit the fair circuit this weekend with shows in Hartington, Nebraska on Saturday (July 22nd) and Minot, North Dakota on Sunday.
