Brandon Lay and his wife Nicole are parents to Ryder and Lara June and they just moved into a new house, so this year’s Christmas holiday will be extra special with two little ones.

Brandon recalls his favorite Christmas gift that he still uses today. “My favorite Christmas present is a Craftsman toolbox that my Mom got for me. I think I was 17? And I love it, because I’ll have it forever and pass it down and any time I get downtime and get that time to tinker with stuff, I think of her. So, that’s the one that stands out the most.”

During his time at home, he and his family are certain to catch his favorite Christmas movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, at least once or twice.

Brandon and his wife cover “Tennessee Christmas.” Check out the video they released a couple of years ago featuring baby Ryder.

  • CHRISTMAS 2021: Little Big Town

The members of Little Big Town have their own traditions, but one they’ve all seemed to have adopted is Kimberly Schlapman’s annual holiday tradition.

“My favorite holiday tradition is, it’s happened every year that I can remember that I’ve been alive,” she says. “We would go over to my grandmother’s house and have Christmas over there, and everybody would come home to Mama and Daddy’s house. We’d sit down and Mama hands out everybody a gift, and we act like we don’t what it is, but we do ’cause it’s always Christmas pajamas. So, everybody opens their Christmas pajamas and goes and puts ’em on, and we come back to the living room and we sit around Daddy and he reads ‘The Christmas Story,’ and we tuck ourselves in until Santa comes.”

One of Karen Fairchild’s traditions include making candy. “Christmases at our house usually included making candy with my mother and my grandmother,” says Karen. “We did everything from potato candy to chocolate dipped peanut butter (JIMI: “That all sounds amazing.”) and fudge. My mom’s fudge recipe is amazing.” KIMBERLY: “What is potato candy?” KAREN: “It does use a potato, but it’s rolled and it has peanut butter inside.”

  • KEITH URBAN MAKES SURPRISE VISIT TO NASHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WITH HELP FROM THE CMA FOUNDATION .

As valued leaders in music education, the CMA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Country Music Association, arranged for 12-time CMA Award winner Keith Urban to meet with students from Hillwood High School in Nashville yesterday, Nov. 30. The unannounced visit with the school’s Rock Band, Orchestra, Choir and Band programs saw Urban hosting a Q&A session that discussed, amongst other things, songwriting, performing and the music industry. In addition to offering students tips and words of encouragement to further their music education, Urban was treated to two student performances in preparation for their winter concerts, one from the school’s Rock Band and the other from its String Orchestra, which performed Urban’s hit “Wasted Time.”

“There is nothing more fulfilling than experiencing the incredible impact music has on a student’s life,” says Tiffany Kerns, Executive Director, CMA Foundation. “Whether they are performing music or talking about the transformative power of music, yesterday’s school visit reiterated that our priority in education is always our students’ ability to be successful, heard, and seen. Keith provided insight on his musical journey but more importantly, he shared a commonality with the students – music making is life changing and critical to our next generation.”

Since its inception in 2011, the CMA Foundation has been committed to improving and sustaining music programs throughout the U.S. so all students have equitable opportunities to participate in a high-quality music education. The CMA Foundation believes music and the arts are part of a well-rounded education, investing $27 million to support these efforts over the last 10 years. During this time, the CMA Foundation has observed why music programs are not thriving, seeing first-hand the challenges educators are facing and, most importantly, the systemic issues that must be addressed in order for every child to have access to music. Committed to its vision, the CMA Foundation is working directly with school districts to identify needs, understand their challenges, build community support and develop local and national resources from partners as part of the non-profit’s systems change model.

  • CHRISTMAS 2021: Caylee Hammack

Caylee Hammack pretty much owes her music career to Buddy, the Elf. She says Elf, starring Will Ferrell, is her favorite Christmas movie, because she started singing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” when she was a young girl, and her dad thought she had a great voice.

“That is the whole reason I started singing was that song,” Caylee recalls. “I was leaning up against the kitchen island when they played ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ in the movie, Elf, and I was singing along to it. I was 13 when it came out. And my dad said, ‘Caylee, you can actually sing.’ I was like, ‘No, don’t make fun of me.’ We were always tease each other, so I thought he was teasing me.’ And he’s like, ‘No, Caylee, I think you should try it,’ and that’s when I signed up for this little talent show in my hometown and I completely embarrassed myself. I sang, ‘I Will Survive,’ and I froze on the first lines – ‘At first I was afraid, I was p-pe-pet-petrified.’ And completely flunked it, but the whole reason I tried out for it is because my dad heard me singing in the kitchen to ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ in the Elf movie. So, Elf is probably my favorite Christmas movie.”

The ever-crafty and creative Caylee recalls her favorite Christmas present one year. “My favorite Christmas present was my mom and dad gave me an art table that had a light underneath it so I could trace things, and I had a place for all my markers and shelves for all my paper and I was just so excited. I was so excited. So, I got a craft table and they wrapped everything that year in Hello Kitty wrapping paper. Yup! That was my favorite Christmas.”

Caylee  recorded a version of Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas” as part of this year’s Spotify Singles: Holiday Edition playlist and campaign.
