  • CHRISTMAS 2020: Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood released her first-ever Christmas album, My Gift, earlier this fall. My Gift, which debuted at No. 1, features a combination of beloved traditional favorites celebrating the spiritual nature of the holiday, as well as several new originals. Two of the original songs are written by Underwood, frequent collaborator Brett James (“Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Something In The Water”), and her Cry Pretty co-producer, David Garcia.  In addition to a very special appearance by Underwood’s 5-year-old son, Isaiah Fisher, on the holiday classic that inspired the album title, “Little Drummer Boy,” My Gift also features her first collaboration with Emmy, GRAMMY®, Oscar, and Tony Award-winner John Legend, on the original track, “Hallelujah,” written by Legend and Toby Gad (“All of Me”).

GRAMMY® Award-winning producer, mixer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Greg Wells produced and arranged the album.  He has written and produced some of the best-selling and highest charting tracks of the past 15 years for such artists as Adele, Celine Dion, Keith Urban, and P!nk, as well as the worldwide smash The Greatest Showman soundtrack.  My Gift features a world-class orchestra, led by the pre-eminent arranger, composer, and conductor David Campbell, whose many credits include iconic recordings by artists including Linda Ronstadt, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Josh Groban, and his son Beck. My Gift is mixed by 14-time GRAMMY® Award winning mixer, Serban Ghenea.

Carrie says some of her Christmas traditions include a lot of traveling to visit her family and her husband Mike Fisher’s family…but also cooking and celebrating the season. “My perfect Christmas, generally we do a lot of traveling around Christmas. We’ll go see either my family or my husband’s family,” says Carrie. “I’ll spend all day cooking. I’ll make a small turkey, even though I don’t eat turkey. I’ll make myself some tofurkey; cranberry sauce, of course. Of course, sweet potato casserole. You have to have that. That’s one of my favorites because it’s a side dish and dessert, but I’ll just make a ridiculous amount of food. Just celebrate, have a fire, we wait for Santa and open our presents, then we’re off to see the next group of family. It’s all about watching it through my sons’ eyes and just getting to spend time with family.”

She continues: “For me growing up, Christmas was always just comforting. We always had the same stockings and the same tree and the same decorations, and we would always decorate the weekend right after Thanksgiving. You know, flip the Christmas switch, put the tree up. Now that we’re adults and have kids, we can go to the Christmas tree farm and we can walk around, and we can pick out which one and ask Isaiah, ‘Which one do you think?’ Just things like that, making those memories. It’s just a joyful time of year.”

One of her favorite memories from childhood was singing Christmas carols for folks in nursing homes. “Christmas was always just about family,” she says. “One thing that we always did growing up that was one of my favorite memories, we would on Christmas Eve we would go to my grandparents’ house. Us kids were always responsible for putting oranges and apples and bananas in little paper bags and we would go down to the nursing home and sing Christmas carols.”

“There is no other like part of the year that gets its own music, like exclusively. When you think about it, like entire radio stations switch over to play Christmas music around Christmas time. So, I feel like it just puts you in the mood for Christmas. Christmas is something that everybody looks forward to and to have Christmas music start playing way before Christmas. It usually does because people just can’t wait to get there. It puts you in a mood. It changes your state of mind. It gets you ready for it and it just makes you feel a certain way.”

  • CHRISTMAS 2020: Maddie & Tae

Platinum-selling duo Maddie & Tae released their first ever holiday EP, We Need Christmas, this year. The six-track project features two originals, “Merry Married Christmas” and the title track “We Need Christmas,” plus beloved holiday favorites including “This Christmas,” “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”

“I think more than ever, as we say in We Need Christmas, we really need all the joy and hope and love that the holiday season brings,” says Maddie Font. “There’s just something about Christmas that kind of silences all the chaos for a couple of days where you just get to quiet down with your loved ones. We’re so excited to celebrate Christmas this year and really cherish that quality time that we didn’t get as much of this year with quarantining and everything. And,” she adds, “we get to blast our own Christmas songs for our families!”

THIS year may look a little different for the duo because of the global pandemic. Maddie Font says “Plans for Christmas in quarantine this year for us, we’re gonna safely go down to Texas and probably stay for a little while and we are just gonna try to make it as normal as possible. Maybe we don’t get to see everyone, but whoever we get to see I’ll be so excited. We’re already talking about for our grandmas of doing a little drive-by, something fun where we can like throw out presents. They can’t be fragile ‘cause that’ll be bad. (laughs) Like a real Santa Claus thing.”

Taylor Kerr (Dye) says one of her favorite and most personal Christmas memories was in 2017, and it involves a new family member making her appearance right before the holiday.

“This is gonna be a personal one for me. Christmas 2017 was right around the time my niece was born,” says Tae. “She was born on December 11th, so right before Christmas, she was like the best Christmas gift ever, so basically I got to spend the whole month of December with her and my sister-in-law and brother, just holding that baby. So, that’s probably going to be one of my favorite Christmas memories ever.”

“We always get a real tree every year, because Jonah’s a stickler for a real tree thing. We always shave off a little part of the bottom of the tree and make an ornament out of the little thing, so we’ll put the year on all of them and collect them. We’ve actually just started collecting nutcrackers, which is super weird, but we name them all. Oh, and White Elephant. We play White Elephant on the Font side of things, and I always end up with the best gift somehow, because Jonah and I tag team White Elephant.”

Maddie & Tae (favorite Christmas gifts) OC: …favorite Christmas. :40
MADDIE: “My favorite Christmas gift as a child was definitely my karaoke machine. My sister and I, we have so many videos of us just, I mean I can’t even believe it’s even lasted. That karaoke machine, I mean, it was hanging in there for like 10 years. Like, it was holding on for dear life, because I was using it every single day.” (laughs) TAE: “My favorite Christmas gift as a child – most people probably don’t really know this about me, but I actually collect snow globes, and as a child I started out collecting dolphin snow globes. It’s very weird, and then it evolved to angels and now it’s a Christmas tradition that every year for Christmas, I get another snow globe. So, it started out as a child, so it’s my favorite gift.”
