In a year unlike any other, it’s fitting that the 54th annual CMA Awards culminated with the genre’s dark horse Eric Church earning the title of Entertainer of the Year.

Now six studio albums into his career, the North Carolinian always approaches things differently. Church’s foresight with his new music, while written pre-pandemic, still addresses the underlying sense of division that was already palpable in our nation. Whether threw his spoken word piece entitled “Who Will Answer The Call?”, released earlier this year, where he shared a message of resolve, or by offering hope in “Through My Ray-Bans,” Church’s music has already served as a unifier .

“There’s a point in the show where I walk out in the crowd and I put my arms around them, we get pictures and it’s what life’s about. It’s that moment… What ‘Through My Ray-Bans’ is about is that I wish we could freeze that and I wish that was how life was — right there, just how I saw you.”

Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker are set to host tonight’s CMA Awards. Country Music’s Biggest Night™ will take place from Music City Center in downtown Nashville and will feature some of the biggest artists and performances in Country Music. Darius joins the CMA Awards stage for the first time as host, while Reba returns for the fifth time.

The two will also perform a special version of “In The Ghetto” in tribute to legendary songwriter Mac Davis who passed away in September at the age of 78. The song, which the pair recorded last month, will be available at all DSPs at midnight ET, tonight, following their CMA Awards performance.

Brandon Lay and his wife Nicole covered the holiday song, “Tennessee Christmas,” and released it on Youtube last year. The couple included their then-infant son Ryder who made his video debut in the clip. The song has special meaning to Brandon who grew up in West Tennessee.

“‘Tennessee Christmas’ is one of my favorite Christmas songs just because I was born and raised in Tennessee, and it’s one we always sang around the piano this time of year,” says Brandon.

Brandon says growing up he didn’t really gravitate towards Christmas music, except “Tennessee Christmas” and Alabama’s classic holiday tune, “Christmas in Dixie,” which were made more special because his mom loves those songs so much. “You know to be honest, I never really loved Christmas music when I was younger, but I always loved a handful,” Brandon recalls. “‘Christmas in Dixie’ and ‘Tennessee Christmas’ were definitely those two that I looked forward to hearing, and my mom liked ‘em, and I think that’s what makes them special to me. These are the ones that stand out just ‘cause of where I’m from, and there’s something about Christmas time and home that go good together.”

On Thursday, December 3rd, HBO Max is spreading holiday cheer with the debut of Carrie Underwood’s new music special “My Gift: A Christmas Special From Carrie Underwood.” In the Max Original, Underwood performs a combination of beloved traditional favorites celebrating the joy and hopefulness of the holiday, as well as new original material from her first ever full-length Christmas album My Gift, which was released earlier this fall. The special features many heartfelt moments and performances, including a duet with John Legend, singing “Hallelujah,” an original song he co-wrote with Toby Gad, which appears on her My Gift album. Chris Stapleton will perform “Starting Over” during the 54th Annual CMA Awards—airing this Wednesday, November 11 at 8:00pm ET/7:00pm CT on ABC.
