• KACEY MUSGRAVES IS JUST A GOOD OL’ ‘DIME STORE COWGIRL.’

Kacey Musgraves’ new album, Pageant Material, is set for release next Tuesday (June 23rd), and one of the songs featured is “Dime Store Cowgirl,” which Kacey co-wrote with Shane McAnally and Luke Laird. The title originates from a real experience Kacey had as a young pre-teen performer back in Texas, but talks about the many career moments she’s had over the last two years.

“I had this title saved for a while. It’s something that someone said to me a long time ago. I was probably 11 or 12, and this stage mom, this certain stage mom of this girl I used to sing with, well, we would wear these really Western outfits and she would like to wear hers down real low, and I like to cock my hat back, my cowboy hat, kind of retro-like, which I still think is really cute today,” says Kacey. “And I was like doing my own thing, and this stage mom came over and she was like, right before we went on stage, she was like, ‘Don’t wear your hat like that! You’re gonna look like some dime store cowgirl.’ So, there’s a song now.”

Kacey will perform a few tracks from her new album when she hits the stage Thursday night in Aspen, Colorado.

Audio / Kacey Musgraves explains how she came up with the song “Dime Store Cowgirl,” which is featured on her new album, Pageant Material, out June 23rd.

“‘Dime Store Cowgirl’ is the second song on the record. This one’s special to me, because it kind of talks about the last year and a half or two and just everything that I’ve gotten to see and do, and every single thing in the song is true. And it’s really from this like small town girl’s point of view. I had this title saved for a while. It’s something that someone said to me a long time ago. I was probably 11 or 12, and this stage mom, this certain stage mom of this girl I used to sing with, well, we would wear these really Western outfits and she would like to wear hers down real low, and I like to cock my hat back, my cowboy hat, kind of retro-like, which I still think is really cute today. • KACEY MUSGRAVES’ ‘FAMILY’ DYNAMIC.

Kacey Musgraves is getting ready to release her sophomore album, Pageant Material, and the subject of one of the songs on the new project, “Family is Family,” should be relatable to just about everybody.

“I just love it, because no matter who you are, what family you’re a part of  — rich, poor, black, white, whatever – family is family. It’s all the same dynamic. Everybody’s got the crazy ones in their family, no matter how much they try to hide it. It’s just the truth, and so yeah, family’s family no matter what,” says Kacey. “That one was just really fun, because we got to sit there and dream up like, and laugh about just all these little nuances that happen in families.”

Pageant Material, which also features “Biscuits,” is set for release Tuesday (June 23rd).

Audio / Kacey Musgraves says “Family is Family” from her new album, Pageant Material, was a fun song to write.

Kacey Musgraves (Family is Family) OC: …it goes, you know? :48
“‘Family is Family’ was a really fun one to write. This one was Josh and Shane – Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally – and I just love it, because no matter who you are, what family you’re a part of  — rich, poor, black, white, whatever – family is family. It’s all the same dynamic. Everybody’s got the crazy ones in their family, no matter how much they try to hide it. It’s just the truth, and so yeah, family’s family no matter what. ‘In church or in prison/you get what you get/and you don’t get to pick ‘em.’ That one was just really fun, because we got to sit there and dream up like, and laugh about just all these little nuances that happen in families, where you don’t talk to someone for a while and then someone dies, and then oh, there they are at the funeral and you reconnect again over some whiskey or whatever, and you’re like, ‘You know, we need to hang out more.’ It’s just the way it goes, you know?”

Nashville, TN – Mercury Nashville’s Kacey Musgraves will release her sophomore album, Pageant Material, on June 23rd. The album features her current single “Biscuits,” which is climbing the charts at country radio. Musgraves co-wrote all tracks on Pageant Material and also co-produced with Shane McAnally and Luke Laird.

“Going back into the studio this time around was really fun and exciting for me because I knew more about myself and my direction,” said Musgraves. “The majority of Pageant Material was recorded live–which was a bit of a departure from “Same Trailer”–and gave it more of a concise, classic sound. All of the incredible musicians were in the same room playing on the entire record, and I think that spirit comes across. The last couple of years have done so much for me, and this project was really affected by that in the best way. There are certain moments lyrically that still hit me hard even after listening so many times. It’s a great glimpse into where my head is from “Same Trailer” to now.”

“It was really hard to pick my first single for this record, because I feel like it’d been a while since I’d said anything and I’ve been one to put out weighty messages or whatever; every song has a message. So, I was like, ‘What am I gonna say next?’ I remember we had listened to everything and gotten most of ’em mixed and had kind of a listening party. I just felt like ‘Biscuits’ was really right. Mostly, it was upbeat. It was fun and just plain country, and it just made no excuses for itself in that way. And I just felt like it would be a fun way to start off the record.”

  • KACEY MUSGRAVES GOES ‘ALL-OUT COUNTRY’ ON LATEST SINGLE, ‘BISCUITS.’

Kacey Musgraves’ new single, “Biscuits,” actually came from the same writing session as her ACM-nominated Song of the Year, “Follow Your Arrow.” She wrote the song with pals Shane McAnally and Brandi Clark, and she says it’s one of the most fun she’s ever had writing a song.

“Biscuits – is one of the most fun songs that I’ve ever gotten to be a part of. It’s funny. It actually started when me and Shane [McAnally] and Brandi Clark were writing ‘Follow Your Arrow,’ and she threw it out as a line, I think. I think it was Brandi. She said, ‘How ‘bout ‘Mind Your Own Biscuits?’ And we were like, of course, slayed, because everything she says is ridiculously amazing,” says the Texas native. “We were like, ‘Okay, that has to be its own song. It has to have its own idea.’ So, we saved it and months later kind of came back to it, and really we just went for, we really went for just all-out country on this song.”

“Biscuits” is the first single from Kacey’s forthcoming album, due out later this year.

Kacey is nominated for ACM Female Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Follow Your Arrow.” The 50th Annual ACM Awards, hosted by Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton, will be broadcast live from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas at 8pm ET on CBS.

  • KACEY MUSGRAVES IS PROUD TO BE A WOMAN OF COUNTRY.

Kacey Musgraves is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Follow Your Arrow” at this year’s ACM Awards. She is one of a handful of country music females garnering acclaim and getting attention from fans, critics and industry insiders. The Texas native is proud to be among the women – past and present – in country music.

“I’m so excited to be part of the women in country music movement,” says Kacey. “I mean, I look at people like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, songwriters who were sassy and intelligent and beautiful and also intelligent and humorous. They inspired me, and if I can be at all any part of that in carrying that on, that’s just the icing on the cake for me, and I feel like I’ve done my job.”

Kacey and her precious three-legged pup Pearl, are featured in the latest issue of People magazine.
