Audio / Luke Grimes talks about the difference between his two jobs -- acting and music.

    Download

Luke Grimes (difference between acting and music) OC: …someone else’s. 1:16

“The one big way that they’re different is that, you know, there’s nothing to hide behind with the music.  I feel like, you know, with the other job getting to know me was never part of the job.  The point was that you didn’t get to know me, that you could believe me as something else and the more you get to know me maybe the less believable that is.  So I think a lot of – you know a lot of mystery is a good thing for people who play characters versus the music is way more personal and it’s my words coming out of my mouth most of the time versus someone else’s.  And the job here really is to let people in to the point where maybe they can relate and realize that it’s not – you know it’s not just them.  We’re all human and we all go through things.  And that’s the kind of music that I’ve always liked and the stuff that has always been important to me has been stuff that made me feel like we’re all kind of in this together and music is such a human thing and a shared experience.  And any kind of story can be that but the actual, the voice is my own rather than someone else’s.”

Audio / Luke Grimes talks about growing up with country music and church hymns.

    Download

Luke Grimes (music growing up) OC: …liked about it too. 1:06
“My parents are from the Appalachian Mountains, country music was a very big deal for them growing up. My dad became a pastor and music is also a big deal in church and these old hymns – in a lot of ways, they’re related. You know, Hank Williams wrote ‘I Saw The Light,’ which I thought was just some old church song. I didn’t realize he wrote that. Religion and church and music and sort of country life, all these things kind of went hand-in-hand and my dad also liked the old Outlaw guys, that was sort of a secret that people in church didn’t know as much, because he didn’t really want to offend anybody. You know, some people really don’t listen to secular music, but he played me all of that stuff too. What was cool about it was how honest those guys were being, and they can be these really masculine guys, but tell you about their feelings, you know, which is rare. It’s rare for grown men that are like that to be vulnerable, and I really liked that about that music, and I think that’s what my dad liked about it too.”

  • LUKE GRIMES RELEASES COVER OF BLAZE FOLEY’S “CLAY PIGEONS.”

Mercury Nashville / Range Music recording artist Luke Grimes today released the song “Clay Pigeons,” a cover of famed Texas artist, Blaze Foley’s song “Clay Pigeons,” which originally was released in February of 1989.

LISTEN TO “CLAY PIGEONS” | HERE

“In my opinion, Blaze Foley is one of the more underrated singer songwriters in the history books of country music,” said Grimes. “He truly was outlaw country in every sense, and he practiced what he preached. Clay Pigeons is not only my favorite song from Blaze, but one of my favorite songs of all time. The structure, melody, and lyrics are all so simple, yet they come together to say something so profound. The songwriting is masterful. There has always been something so comforting to me about the melancholy feel of this song.”

Grimes is currently on tour and has more dates throughout the end of the year.

The EP features tracks that are highly personal to the country artist, including the fan favorite “No Horse to Ride,” the recently released “Burn” and one of Grimes’ personal favorites, “Ain’t Dead Yet,” amongst others.

“To me Pain Pills or Pews should feel like the very beginning of a story. The songs were chosen because they felt the most personal and even the outside songs felt almost biographical,” said Grimes. “This is my first time putting music into the world in such a significant way and the most important thing with this collection of songs was that it established a relationship with me and anyone who might want to listen. I want to ‘let people in’ so to speak, so that hopefully the story can continue.”

Audio / Luke Grimes talks about recording outside songs for his EP.

    Download

Luke Grimes (cutting outside songs) OC: …the context. :50
“One of my favorite things about Nashville and country music and Music Row is that the song is the star.  And people can sing songs for generations and pass them down and you have different versions, and a really good song is a really good song. There was no part of me that needed like this percentage of this album to be things that I wrote. It was never like that. It was just kind of honestly going through the process and when we had enough songs we were going to go in and make something. And the whole time that I was writing they were sending me outside stuff and with those two it was as simple as like I understand what they’re saying. I could sing that, and I could mean it and it makes me feel something and I could mean that just as much as something that I wrote down on a piece of paper. I understood the content and the context.”

  • LUKE GRIMES SET TO RELEASE HIS DEBUT EP THIS FRIDAY.

Luke Grimes will release his debut eight-song EP Pain Pills Or Pews on Friday (October 20th). He wrote six of the songs on the Dave Cobb produced project.

Being the son of a pastor, Luke says the title of the new album came from a song idea and felt like it was how he grew up.

“Really it was a song idea.  I mean it still is, but it was a song title I had, and when I was thinking about what to name the album I was like there’s a lot of – there’s a lot of kind of honestly on this album that isn’t fun,” he says. “Some of the themes aren’t so fun and that’s okay.  And where I grew up and how I grew up and my dad being a pastor, I just felt like the religious aspect and my upbringing needed to be tied into this album somehow because it’s such a big part of especially this first outing, you know. The idea behind that song was that where certain people are from are sort of your options.  So, it felt like where I come from.”

“‘Burn’ came from a simple classic rock style melody and the idea of running headfirst into a heartbreak, almost asking for it,” said Grimes. “The song always had a bit of Tom Petty vibe as he’s always been a big influence for me. Getting in the room with Randy Montana and Josh Thompson showed me what seasoned songwriters can do with a simple idea; I love how this track turned out.”

“Out of the ones that we have cut so far, those eight just felt, it felt complete as a thing on its own, and it touched on a lot of the bases of the kinds of things that I wanted to say on this first outing. And there was enough sort of different tempos and different feels, and I think, it just felt kind of complete. We just felt like there are some more songs, and we’ll figure those out later, but this felt like the right thing to sort of come out with now.”
