  • CHRISTMAS 2019: Luke Bryan

Luke Bryan usually has a house full of family at Christmas. This year, the Georgia native will take his family where the snow is fresh and there is a chill in the air. “This year, we’re excited. We are insuring ourselves of a white Christmas. We’re going snow skiing on Christmas. So, snowmen, chestnuts roasting by an open fire, the whole Jack Frost thing, snow skiing, chapped skin, busted lips…”

The Bryan clan will probably continue their tradition of having chili dogs on Christmas Eve, as well. “We have a pajama night and we do chili dogs on Christmas Eve, and we’ve always done that.  My mother comes up and we go shop. She makes me go shop with her, so we have to pick out all the right stuff. We have to get the proper buns, the proper wieners. It’s very important.  All beef wieners for the chili dog cooking. It’s a ritual. So, we’re eating chili dogs in pajamas, and so it’s special anytime you can come up with fun traditions and hold true to them. Yeah, so cooking chili dogs in a onesie is pretty special.”

Find audio below of him talking about the unique tradition, his most meaningful Christmas gift, his favorite Christmas movie and much more.

“By far the best Christmas present I have ever gotten and will ever get was when my wife Caroline went and found my brother’s old pickup truck from 1996 that they found the VIN number and it was down in Louisiana and it was still on the road.  And her and my dad went down, they picked it up, brought it to Nashville and Christmas Eve night pulled into the driveway with it, and let’s just say that yes, the tears were flowing, and it will never be topped. I don’t know how you’ll ever top it. What an amazing moment for me and my family and it was pretty special.  And that truck is where we do our turkey hunting; it’s the turkey hunting truck. So, all my turkey hunting gear stays in there, and when the boys see me pull up in my brother’s truck, they know we’re fixing to go turkey hunting.”

You’re exhausted and you’ve got all your family there.  It doesn’t get any better than certainly waking up on Christmas mornings and just having that special time.”

  • CHRISTMAS 2019: Keith Urban

Sometimes, Keith Urban and his family, including wife Nicole Kidman and daughters Sunday and Faith, head Down Under for the holiday, visiting family and hitting the beach, which is what he did on Christmas Day when he was a kid.

“We had great Christmases growing up. I really, really enjoyed them,” says Keith. “Mostly, we’d go to the beach, you know, ’cause there it’s summertime. Load up the station wagon and head off to the beach.”

He and his family still love to do that when they’re in Australia since it’s summer there. “We still love going to the beach at Christmas time, as long as we’re in Australia, because it’s like the Fourth of July. It’s huge. Everybody’s out. It feels very celebratory. It’s in the ‘90s. It’s crazy, but having grown up with that, it feels very natural to me. Albeit it, we still had all of the same Christmas songs, so we’re in like 90-degree heat with shorts and tank tops singing ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland,’ and I remember getting Christmas cards of like Santa on a surfboard, so that probably explains a lot.”

He says the lights, the music and getting the house decorated put him in the spirit of Christmas. “The lights going up, which was a little earlier this year because of Thanksgiving, you know, we didn’t wait,” says Keith. “We just put those puppies up, and the place looked awesome. We had the best Christmas-looking Thanksgiving ever. (laughs) So, the lights, the music, all of that, the house sort of transforming into Christmas. I love it. It’s sad when it all has to go away.”

Keith just released the first Christmas song, “I’ll Be Your Santa Tonight,” which he co-wrote with Shane McAnally (see video below).

After Christmas, Keith will be getting ready for his fourth headlining gig on New Year’s Eve in Nashville.

Audio / As a kid in Australia, Keith Urban headed to the beach for Christmas. Because it's summer Down Under during the holidays, most families hang out in the surf and sun.

We had great Christmases growing up. I really, really enjoyed them. Mostly, we’d go to the beach, you know, ’cause there it’s summertime. Load up the station wagon and head off to the beach.”

  • CHRISTMAS 2019: Jon Pardi

Jon Pardi likes a good holiday movie. One of his favorite Christmas films is Bad Santa, starring Billy Bob Thornton, but for the PG crowd, it would have to be Elf.

“Bad Santa’s pretty good,” he says. “But I have to say if you’re gonna watch it with little cousins, I would have to say Elf is pretty much probably one of the funniest Christmas movies to ever be that new and beat out all of the old Christmas movies. It is definitely up there.”

This year, he’s taking his fiancée Summer, his mother, sister and Summer’s parents to Hawaii to celebrate the holidays before Christmas. “Me and (fiancée) Summer came up with the idea that well if we just invited the family, no gifts, just get your way to Hawaii, there’s no gifts, we’re just gonna go and help celebrate as a family and everybody and Christmas in Maui. So, my mom, my sister’s coming, Summer’s parents are coming, so we kinda turned it into this nice family vacation that’s over Christmas, and then we’ll fly back to Nashville and have Christmas there. So, it’s cool.”

One of his favorite memories is of his grandmother’s Christmas tree, and he attributes that to his love for Elvis and the song, “Blue Christmas.”

“One of my favorite memories of my grandmother’s tree, and I think …why I love Elvis so much, and she loved Elvis. She had an ornament and it was Elvis, and it was always on her tree. You’d go and you’d hit a button, and it’d sing ‘Blue Christmas.’ And it just went, ‘I’ll have a Blue Christmas without you.’ And I’d just always t hit it, and he’d be doing like his pose with a microphone, so yeah, ‘Blue Christmas’ and that ornament, I think that’s probably why I like Elvis so much. Hey man, I’ll have a Blue Christmas…”

Jon’s latest single, “Heartache Medication,” is closing in on the Top 5 on the country charts.

Audio / Jon Pardi says getting a guitar for Christmas when he was a young boy – even though he didn’t take care of it – probably sparked his interest in making music for a living.

“One Christmas I got a guitar, but I was real young, so this guitar spent multiple nights in the backyard and probably got hit by a sprinkler. I was a kid. I didn’t know what to do with this thing. It was like I knew how to strum it, but I didn’t know how to take care of it. I must’ve been six or five, you know, I thought it was kind of a toy then, but it started the whole spark. So, I always kind of say, I always tell parents you just never know, if you get a little toy that’s a guitar or drum set, you never know what that’ll spark in a child’s mind. So, who would’ve know if I had never gotten that guitar.”

Audio / Jon Pardi just left for Hawaii with his fiancée, mother, sister and extended family to celebrate Christmas early. He will be back at his farm in Tennessee for the actual holiday.

  • COUNTRY AIRCHECK NAMES LUKE BRYAN MOST HEARD ARTIST OF THE DECADE.

Four-time Entertainer of the Year, Platinum selling artist, award-winning songwriter, American Idol celebrity judge, consummate performer, these are all accomplished titles that describe Luke Bryan’s career. And now as 2019 is coming to a close, Luke is end-capping ten years of stellar career accomplishments as Country Aircheck has named him the Most-Heard Artist of the Decade. He will be the subject of Aircheck’s The Interview feature in the year-end print issue.

    SAMSUNG CSC

Luke told Aircheck he still sees so much more ahead to do and is energized for the future. “I love being the guy a lot of people count on. I don’t wake up with anxiety about it. I wake up going, all right, let’s get after it and show the world what we’re going to do this year or this week.”

Additional decade honors include Luke being named as the first-ever recipient of the ACM’s Album of the Decade Award for Crash My Party as presented to him during a recent Grand Ole Opry appearance. The ACM Album of the Decade Award recognizes an album that has impacted country music over the decade. The factors to be considered are, but are not limited to, the success at radio of singles released from album, album concept, commercial media, sales and streaming, artistic merit and ACM Award recognition. Billboard said, “it wasn’t just his star power that made Crash My Party special, as most of the album’s singles — like the poignant “Drink a Beer” and nostalgic “Roller Coaster” — were more focused on Bryan’s heartfelt croon as opposed to the party anthems that “bro country” made popular at that time.”

22 of Bryan’s 23 #1 hits have been in the last decade including his breakthrough hit ““Country Girl Shake It For Me” which was included in Billboard Magazine’s “100 Songs that Defined a Decade” list out last month. Other #1 hits include “I Don’t Want This Night To End,” “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Everyday,” “Play It Again” and poignant songs like “Fast,” “Drink A Beer” and “Most People Are Good,” which Music Row named Song of the Year in 2018 and Rolling Stone at its peak touted “it’s message – coming from a star on the level of Luke Bryan – is important in the country music world.”

Luke’s headline concert tours have played for over one million fans every year for the last six years with four of those reaching 1.5 million. In total Luke has performed for nearly 12 million fans in the last ten years. His 2019 “Sunset Repeat Tour” wrapped this fall with his 36th career headline stadium concert at Ford Field in Detroit and during the show Luke was presented with a new music plaque signifying his continued domination in the format with more RIAA certified digital singles than any other country artist with 54 million digital singles, 12.5 million albums and Seven billion streams. Luke has four Platinum albums, two 4x-Platinum albums, seven RIAA certified albums, 22 Platinum singles and 12 Multi-Platinum singles.

In this past decade Luke has presented ten Farm Tours (11 years career total), seven headline tours, six years of Spring Break shows and six Crash My Playa concert events. He was recognized as a CMT Artist of the Year six consecutive times, was twice named the Entertainer of the Year by BOTH the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association and was honored as a NSAI Artist/Songwriter of the Year. In total Luke has won over 40 music awards including six ACM awards, six CMT Music Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards, two CMA awards, an iHeart and a Teen Choice award and more.

  • CHRISTMAS 2019: Lauren Alaina

Lauren Alaina released her own version of the holiday classic, “O Holy Night,” last month. She loves Christmas music so much she’d like to release a full album of holiday songs. She has a few favorite songs that she’d have to include on the collection. “I have a few favorites. It’s like a fast favorite actually. Surprisingly is ‘Oh Santa’ by Mariah Carey. I jam to that, girl. I mean I am crazy about that song,” says Lauren. “And I also like ‘O Holy Night,’ like when I just want to really sing and kind of get in the Christmas spirit. It was my grandmother’s favorite, one of her favorites. My grandmother loved Christmas.”

When it comes to her favorite holiday movies, she can’t pinpoint just one. “Oh gosh! I have so many favorite Christmas movies, but I usually like the funny ones like The Grinch and Elf,” declares Lauren. “I don’t know. I like all of it. It’s so hard to pick. I love Christmas.”

Lauren’s favorite Christmas gift would have to be the reason for the season. When she was a little girl, she really wanted a Bible with her name on it, just like her parents had. “My favorite Christmas gift I’ve ever been given, gosh, that’s so hard to pick, but my Mom and Dad had their names on the front of their Bibles, and I was so jealous of that as a kid. So, I begged my Mom to get me a Bible that had my name on it, and she actually got this Bible that you design the whole thing yourself. And she designed this Bible for me and it had my name on it and I still have it, and it’s one of my favorite gifts I’ve ever been given.”

As for her favorite Christmas gift as a child, Lauren goes back to the time Santa Claus brought her a Barbie bicycle, and she felt like she was in charge. “My favorite Christmas memory is when I got my Barbie bike when I was six years old, and I thought I ruled the world because it had a horn and it had Barbie’s picture on it.”

  • MADDIE & TAE RELEASE THE VIDEO FOR THEIR NEW HOLIDAY SONG, “HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS.”

Maddie & Tae just released the video for their holiday offering, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The clip features home videos, studio footage, photos of the duo with their families, significant others and even a few childhood pics.

Since Maddie Marlow has been together with new husband Jonah Font, whom she started dating in high school, the pair have a handful of Christmas traditions already.
“We always get a real tree every year, because Jonah’s a stickler for a real tree thing. We always shave off a little part of the bottom of the tree and make an ornament out of the little thing, so we’ll put the year on all of them and collect them,” says Maddie. “We’ve actually just started collecting nutcrackers, which is super weird, but we name them all. Oh, and White Elephant. We play White Elephant on the Font side of things, and I always end up with the best gift somehow, because Jonah and I tag team White Elephant.”

Taylor Dye (Tae) just got engaged to fiancé, songwriter Josh Kerr, and this will be the first Christmas they will share together, so she hopes to create several Christmas traditions in the future. “This is Josh and I’s first Christmas together, so I can’t wait to find some traditions that we’ll start to do together,” says Tae. “I bet we’d make some cookies. I bet we’ll watch a lot of movies.”

The duo is climbing the country charts with their smash hit “Die From a Broken Heart.”

We always shave off a little part of the bottom of the tree and make an ornament out of the little thing, so we’ll put the year on all of them and collect them. We’ve actually just started collecting nutcrackers, which is super weird, but we name them all. Oh, and White Elephant. We play White Elephant on the Font side of things, and I always end up with the best gift somehow, because Jonah and I tag team White Elephant.”

“This is Josh and I’s first Christmas together, so I can’t wait to find some traditions that we’ll start to do together. I bet we’d make some cookies. I bet we’ll watch a lot of movies. We’ll see.”

  • DIERKS BENTLEY CELEBRATES THE CHART-TOPPING SUCCESS OF HIS RECENT SMASH “LIVING.”

Dierks Bentley celebrated the chart-topping success of his recent No. 1 smash, “Living,” with a party at local Nashville hotspot Superica with the song’s co-writers Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley and Jon Nite. The four of them wrote the tune during a writers’ retreat in Colorado after doing a little “living” by taking a hike in the mountains. Dierks said he wanted to write the song as a reminder to himself.

“I’m so glad it resonates with people, but I wrote the song to myself, as a reminder to myself, and I’m glad the fans can relate to it, but certainly when I sing it every night, I’m like singing it to me as a reminder like hey, make the most of every day,” said Dierks prior to the party. “When I drop my kids off at school, I say, ‘This is gonna be a great day or a really great day. You know, you’ve got two options. That’s the only options there are.’ At least go into feeling that way. It might not be that way, but at least start off with that expectation. I think the song’s become a mantra to like to just start off the day to maximize it to be a great day. We were just talking about taking our kids on a Grand Canyon ATV trip, just trying to find ways to keep living, I guess.”

The song started from a trip to Walgreen’s by a couple members of his band on the road.

”‘Living’ started from the road, actually, and just the lack of living that you sometimes can do on a tour bus, right? You sit in the bus all day long, then you go play the show, and you sit in the bus all day long and nobody’s doing any living,” said Dierks. “We kind of have this funny thing we started with the band where if someone went to Walgreen’s, it was a really big deal. ‘Wow, man, you went out and lived some life today. You actually went to Walgreen’s. Wow!’ The bar for living is so low as a musician on the road, so we really made it a personal challenge for me and the band to kind of like do more stuff during the day on the road.”

“Living” is the third consecutive chart-topper off his critically acclaimed No. One record, following the two back-to-back consecutive No. One hits, “Woman, Amen” and “Burning Man.” Hosted by ASCAP and BMI, Bentley was joined by his son and “Living” music video co-star Knox, as well as co-writers Ross Copperman (BMI), Ashley Gorley (ASCAP), Jon Nite (ASCAP) and producer Arturo Buenahora.

“This is it. This is the end of THE MOUNTAIN. It was a journey that started during a trip to Colorado with incredible songwriters where we unplugged for days and just had so much fun,” Bentley said. “To have three songs off this album go number No. One that are so meaningful to me is something special. If I were to do a writer’s night tomorrow, I would play all three of those songs…these songs guided me to where my life is now.”

He was just announced as one of the headliners – along with Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett – for the Trailblazer Country Music and Camping Festival in Hunter, New York June 12th – 14th.
