• CHRISTMAS 2022: Kassi Ashton

Kassi Ashton grew up in a rural town called California, Missouri, and she took ballet and other dance classes for many years. So, one of her favorite Christmas memories include being in The Nutcracker every year. “One of my favorite Christmas traditions growing up was always being a part of The Nutcracker,” says Kassi. “[I took] ballet my entire life, and now that I’ve graduated and moved on, I go see The Nutcracker at the Nashville Ballet every year. I can’t wait to have a little girl some day and put her in ballet class.”

Kassi loves Christmas music, especially the holiday classics. “My favorite thing about Christmas hands down is Christmas music. I start playing eh, the day after Thanksgiving usually, if not a little sooner. I love the classics – Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, anything that you know by heart and you don’t have to really think about. Christmas songs are the best,” she says. “My favorite Christmas song is ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ by Judy Garland in the key of G, because that’s my key [laughs], and I can sing along perfectly.” [laughs]

In 2020, Kassi mixed melancholy and hope beautifully to deliver a stirring rendition of the Dolly Parton classic “Hard Candy Christmas.” Written by Carol Hall for the Broadway musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which later became a movie starring Parton, “Hard Candy Christmas” serves as testimony that while things may be tough right now, it will get better.

  • KASSI ASHTON RECEIVED AN EDUCATION IN PERFORMING AT AN EARLY AGE.

Kassi Ashton is currently on the country radio airwaves with her single, “Dates In Pickup Trucks,” which she co-wrote and produced with Luke Laird and David Garcia. The California native singer/songwriter, who also competed in many pageants when she was young, says she’s been singing since she was a tiny tot.

“I always say I’ve been singing since before I could read, because my mom would sneak me into karaoke bars, literally sneak me, because you know the high-top cocktail tables? She’d put me under the tablecloth, and I’d do scratch off tickets under the tablecloth,” she recalls. “But she would stand behind me, because I couldn’t read the prompter and tell me the words before they came up on the screen, and I was so little that if people clapped too loud, I would cry. So, I’ve literally been singing since I was tiny.”

  • KASSI ASHTON RELEASES NEW TRACK “I DON’T GO BACK” TODAY.

MCA Nashville and Interscope Records artist Kassi Ashton releases new song “I Don’t Go Back,” today. Written by Ashton with Luke Laird and Hillary Lindsey, “I Don’t Go Back” is a slow, introspective track shows off Kassi’s soulful voice as the lyrics allow her to reminisce over good parts of that past while being exactly where she wants to be in the present, “I’m a moving on, straight ahead. Eyes on the road always does me best.  I’m out with the old, in with the new.  Yeah, I don’t go back but if I did, it’d be to you,” and “I don’t miss who I was, I’m exactly where I wanna be now.  These ain’t tears, this ain’t no flood.  It’s just a song that I can’t turn down.”

“My favorite part of songwriting is giving someone a real piece of myself from a certain time in my life,” shares Kassi. “It’s more than sharing a picture and it’s more than sharing a story; it’s sharing a feeling. When I wrote this song in 2017 with Luke and Hillary, we all put a piece of ourselves in it. I hope you listen and feel and find a piece of yourself too.”

Listen to “I Don’t Go Back” HERE

Along with the new song, Kassi brings two live performance videos to light today from a recent trip to VEVO Studio in Brooklyn, N.Y.  Watch “I Don’t Go Back” HERE and “Dates In Pickup Trucks” HERE.

Kassi’s debut radio single, “Dates In Pickup Trucks,” is playing now on country radio. She also makes several appearances at next week’s CMA Fest in Nashville including a performance on the Chevy Vibes Stage on Saturday, June 11.

    “I Don’t Go Back” Lyrics:

    I don’t cry

But if I did, there’d be an Eric Church song playing

    In my car

Driving past the blue school doors that are faded

    I’m not sad

    But if I was, there’d be a ’97 F-250

    Driving away

In my head while I’m in Nashville feeling guilty

I’m a moving on, straight ahead

Eyes on the road always does me best

I’m out with the old, in with the new

Yeah, I don’t go back but if I did, it’d be to you, you, you

    I don’t go reminiscing

But when I do, it’s usually when I’ve been drinking

    Like tonight

Start thinking about you playing pool in your mama’s basement

    I don’t wanna be 17 again

    I don’t go chasing around could-have-been’s

    And I don’t regret

That ain’t me but if I did I know where I’d be ‘cause

I’m a moving on, straight ahead

Eyes on the road always does me best

I’m out with the old, in with the new

Yeah, I don’t go back but if I did, it’d be to you, you, you

I don’t miss who I was, I’m exactly where I wanna be now

These ain’t tears, this ain’t no flood

    It’s just a song that I can’t turn down’

    I don’t cry

But if I did there’d be an Eric Church song playing, playing

I’m a moving on, straight ahead

Eyes on the road always does me best

I’m out with the old, in with the new

Yeah, I don’t go back but if I did, it’d be to you, you, you

It’d be to you, you, you

    About Kassi Ashton
With a little bit of rock, a hell of a lot of soul, and a throwback R&B groove, Kassi Ashton has crash landed on country radio with her latest song and radio debut, “Dates In Pickup Trucks.”

“Kassi Ashton is in line for Nashville domination, and she’ll do it her way – unapologetically,” proclaims PEOPLE Magazine. Kassi brings a whole new attitude to country music. The California, Missouri singer/songwriter touched down with a string of critically acclaimed tracks released by UMG Nashville in conjunction with Interscope Records. Her introductory release “California, Missouri” stirred widespread critical acclaim from Taste of Country, CMT, The Boot, and many more. Named “Who to Watch” by Huffington Post, The Tennessean, and radio personality Bobby Bones. Rolling Stone lauds her as “a devilish songwriter who isn’t afraid to flip convention on its head,” while Refinery29 claims, “she blends pop aesthetics with a presence doused in no-fucks-left-to-give authenticity,” PAPER Magazine calls her “the next big country superstar,” and American Songwriter notes, “Ashton brings powerful storytelling and a sense of poetry in every release.”

Kassi defies convention and defines her signature style with confessional, catchy storytelling and dynamic delivery on songs including “Dates In Pickup Trucks,” on country radio now, and critically acclaimed releases “Heavyweight,” “California, Missouri,” “Hopeless,” “Violins,” and more.

  • KASSI ASHTON SHOWS A DIFFERENT SIDE TO HER ARTISTRY WITH “DATES IN PICKUP TRUCKS.”

Kassi Ashton is definitely a renaissance woman, as she has a wide range of abilities and interests. Her parents made sure she had a very diverse childhood comprised of assorted interests and hobbies. At her mom’s it was beauty pageants, dance class six days a week , speech contest, theatre, etc., while at her Dad’s she grew up on a farm shooting muzzleloaders with her grandpa competitively her entire life. She also grew up on dirt bikes and literally strapped to the back of her father’s Harley.

Kassi’s artistry is also varied, evoking different feelings and different experiences. Her critically-acclaimed songs “Heavyweight,” “California, Missouri,” “Hopeless,” “Violins” and more join her debut radio single “Dates In Pickup Trucks,” which is climbing the country charts and says it’s a song that hopefully takes people on a happy, stress-free journey. “All the songs I previously put out all show a different side of who I am as an artist, and ‘Dates In Pickup Trucks’ is just another side,” says Kassi. “If I was in a mini-van with three screaming kids in the back talking about tiktok, my boss has pissed me off and I have to go home and make dinner, what do I want to hear? One, I want to hear something nostalgic. Everybody loves nostalgia. I want to be taken back, but also maybe live in it again, and I want something fresh enough, light enough that makes me forget about what’s holding me down and stressing me out and feel a little better.”

Kassi wrapped up a handful of dates with Caitlyn Smith recently, and you can catch her next at CMA Music Festival in Nashville in a few weeks.

You see all of these women just juggle everything masterfully and many of them are moms and they’re superstars and they’re talented, and you know, I know how hard they work because I’m in their shoes somewhat and doing the same juggling. You know, you have the kids and the career and you’re just trying to crush everything you do and being pulled in a million different directions. And to see women like that who are just beautiful and smart and strong and talented, knowing that they have come first and they’re still getting to do what they love and they’re still getting to be the mom and the wife and all the things – that’s just such an inspiration to me and just lets me know that I can do it too.”

Loretta Lynn has been such an inspiration to me and all of the women who came before me – Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, all the way to Miranda Lambert and the legends of today. I‘m just so very grateful that not only do I have women that have paved the way for us coming up in the country music industry, but I also have amazing women around me that I get to celebrate every single time that they put a new song out or win an award. I feel like I’ve found a family in country music, in the women of country music and I just couldn’t be more grateful.”

Maddie & Tae (women most admire) OC: (Maddie) …everybody! :43
“I definitely can’t pick just one inspiring woman in my life, because I’ve been blessed by many. (TAE INTERRUPTS) Yeah, I was gonna say Tae is definitely one that inspires me always for many different reasons. You are really good at living in the moment, I feel like; very good at being present and I always pick that up from you every time we hang out. (TAE SAYS, “Your joy inspires me.”) My mom, she is just a baddie and amazing. I would say our manager Haley. She is just so great at balancing work life and family life, and I really admire that. And I would say, I don’t know. All the women in my life – my sister, my sister-in-laws, my mother-in-law. I love ‘em all. My grandma…everybody!”

“I was eight-years-old, and my church, I grew up singing in the church, and my church drove to Arlington [Texas] from Waco to go see a Texas Rangers baseball game. We were all the way up in the nosebleed section, and the announcer says, ‘Please rise as 10-year-old LeAnn Rimes sings the National Anthem,’ and that was before ‘Blue’ came out. I was already stuck on her, and then when ‘Blue’ came out, I was just like done.”

    Download

Mickey Guyton (on pursuing a career as a singer) OC: …all those people. :50
“It wasn’t like something where I was like, ‘Dad, I want to be a professional singer.’ It wasn’t until I was older when I finally admitted it. When you say something like that, it’s pretty crazy. What are we normally supposed to be? We’re supposed to be a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, go to school and for me to even say that was just kind of crazy. So, I took an interest in singing. I started doing solos in the church choir or the school had a talent show. I’d bring my boom box, and I’d sing ‘I Will Always Love You.’ I was just mesmerized by big-voiced women, so from LeAnn, I started listening to Dolly and Patsy Cline and Patty Loveless and Reba McEntire and Faith Hill and Martina McBride, all those people.”

Audio / PRISCILLA BLOCK SAYS SHE IS INSPIRED BY HER MOTHER.

Priscilla Block (Mom) OC: …in the butt. :25
“I would honestly say one of the most inspiring women in my life is my mom because she raised five kids, and honestly had no clue what she was doing, but kind of always just made life so fun. She was there when we needed to laugh and when we needed to cry, and she was also there when we needed a little kick in the butt.”

Audio / Priscilla Block says her favorite compliment from another woman is that she helps make them feel confident about themselves.

Priscilla Block (favorite compliment from another woman) OC: …means the world. :18
“I would say that my favorite compliment that I’ve received from a woman is that I made them feel comfortable in their own skin. You know, it’s something that doesn’t come easy all of the time, and it’s something that I’ve worked on my whole life on feeling comfortable, so when another girl says, ‘Yeah, you make me feel confident,’ it means the world.”

Audio / A few years ago, Taylor Swift said Reba McEntire was one of her favorite people in the world.

Taylor Swift (Reba) OC: …factored in. :33
“Reba is absolutely one of my favorite people on this planet. And yk, I think when you’re making your way up in the music industry, you have all these heroes and the reasons why they’re your heroes are one thing, and then as soon as you kind of get in the industry, your guidelines change a little bit. For me, my heroes now are great people first and great artists second – people that I just feel strive to be great people and kind people first before anything else gets factored in.”
