“‘Round Here Buzz,’ I mean, I’ve done a few of these songs in my career; this nostalgic kind of song about the guy that kind of wishes things were different than they are. I know a lot of people like that and like this from where I’m from. I’m from a small town, and I’ve just seen this. I think part of the reason, I feel like we’re pretty good at this kind of song, and I think part of it is because I’ve seen it, I’ve felt it. It’s a motive to me. So, I think with this song, there’s just something about it that’s always spoke to me. It was one I was a pretty big champion for on the album and one that I think will be a hit for us, and the right kind of hit, not just one that’s a hit. One that has emotive qualities.”

“Talking about the year, a lot of people have asked ‘Why did Vegas bother you so much?’ I mean, it bothered all of us, but why maybe I took it more personal was because the same people that had been there all year, 20, 30 songs with their arms around each other’s shoulders that had became family to me, were the people that were affected that night. I think there was a part of me that went away that night too. And I think how I respond to that as a writer, [I’m] not sure yet. I’m working on it, and I may already have, I mean, that’s really what ‘Why Not Me’ was my, at least some way for me to process it and heal, maybe offer something for other people, but I did that as much for myself as anything else. I didn’t try to say ‘Hey, let me write a song.’ It just happened. It came out.”

“The connection that was developed with the fans from the Holdin’ My Own Tour was such a deep connection. It was always there, but this was a deeper thing, because not only did a lot of these people come to 20, 30 shows, but then they’re coming to 20, 30 shows and they’re giving 3 1/2-4 hours. One of my favorite parts of every night was ‘Holdin’ My Own,’ the last song and everybody would always put their arms around each other shoulders and sway back and forth. It was just a neat moment for me after 3 1/2-4 hours.”

“I didn’t really know where to be when the tour wrapped. I was emotionally drained, physically drained, voice shredded and didn’t really know what to do when you didn’t have go somewhere the next week to play, because it had been such a, it was almost like a battle. Week to week was like, ‘Okay, we’ve got to get through these three. We’re here, here and here.’ Ten to 12 hours of music in three or four nights, it becomes one of those things that I have to mentally have to prepare for, especially for the Thursday night show, the first of three. I know I’ve got to do a night and then I’ve got to do it again and again. So, it was just such a focal point of my entire life and my career that that’s all I focused on week to week. I never looked past the next three or four ever. Really, I got to where I wouldn’t even look past the next show. I’d go, ‘Okay, I’m gonna get through Detroit, then I’ll worry about this and then when I get through that, then I’ll worry about,’ it got to that point by the end. It was such an interesting thing just all of a sudden it be done.”

“My manager, John Peets, grabbed me at the Nashville show after we had been through this, and he said, ‘You don’t know this, but I want you to take some time and I want you to process. I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire, not only country, in my entire career.’ He said, ‘You should take some time and process what that is, what that means.’ And he said, ‘Just take some time.’ And that’s what I’ve been trying to do between then and now. I’m trying to figure out what that is and then really what my job is to figure out where we go from here and that’s what I’m working on now.”

We’ll take like a couple of tables and throw them together and throw some sheets on it just to make it look nice. It’s a very redneck display of like tableware, because all the plates don’t match and the forks and knives don’t match, but we don’t care. People will bring wine, and at the end of the day, we’ll probably have 12-15 people all sitting at dinner together that weren’t able to go home with their families, and just enjoy it with friends. It’s been really fun. Definitely a lot less stress than going home.”

“The first Thanksgiving I ever had here, which was 25 years ago, ‘cause I’ve been here a long time now. But the first one I ever had, I remember going to this family’s home, they invited me to Thanksgiving, and I couldn’t believe the volume of food. It was insane. I’ve never seen so much food in my life. Then after the food, there was like 12 desserts. I was like, ‘Why are there so many desserts?’ They said, ‘Well, because every Aunt and every Grandma, everybody brought their thing, their special dessert, and you have to try every one of ‘em.’ I’m like, ‘There’s like THREE apple cobblers.’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, but they’re made by different people and they’re all watching, so you have to make sure you try everything up there.’ [laughs] I was in love with Thanksgiving immediately.” [laughs]
