“New Year’s is rough. New Year’s hurts no matter what’s going on. I’ve played a lot of New Year’s shows, you know, but I’ve honestly found that it’s not my favorite night to throw down. Look, for a living, that’s what I do. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, I host a big party; not only on stage, but I’ve got friends backstage. It starts before the concert sometimes, [and] it goes long after the concert, so a lot of times on New Year’s, I’m looking for a really mellow hang – a good party, good friends, pretty chill. Some of my best New Year’s – it doesn’t make for great radio – but some of my best New Years have been just like actually hearing fireworks go off while I’m in bed, [laughs] and know I’m gonna wake up the next morning for the first day of the New Year feeling great, feeling recharged and I’m ready to go ad go into the New Year feeling good as opposed to going into it with a giant Jagerbomb hangover, which I’ve done many, many times. So, the goal this year is to go into it feeling pretty good and the kids help with that, because you really just don’t want to be hungover with children. It’s not a good feeling. You would probably admit to any crime to get them, just feel better, and get them leave you alone. So, [I’m] gonna try to hit New Year’s this year in stride.”

“I think January first is universally accepted as a dog. So I mean, a little hair of the dog, I guess. But just…water and stay on the couch, I guess. There’s no real sure-fire cure for that.”

“The best hangover cure – I’ve got two. One is 5-hour Energy [bottles], because of all the B-vitamins that are in it. You can start pounding those, and it’s either gonna work, or it’s gonna keep you up and prolong your misery. But the other one I have is just take two Advil and a beer in the morning. Hair of the dog, man – that works every time.”

“My hangover cure is Bloody Mary’s. But be careful, because once you have a couple, don’t go to beer, because if you go to beer, you’re gonna start drinking again. And you end up a morning drunk. Or if you wanna go the non-alcoholic route, there’s nothing you can do for hangovers. You just gotta deal with it.”

“You know, obviously just the energy around it being a new year and new goals and it’s my refresh for the year, and, but it’ll I get to kind of start my refresh right at the very first moment of time, so I’m really looking forward to that.

“Best hangover cure—I think it’s depending on what I have to do that day or the next day. But yeah, there’s definitely two. There’s my old approach, which was the football approach when I played college football, was we used to have Sunday morning rundown and no matter how much fun you had on Saturday night, you had to be at the field at 8 or 9am and we used to have to jog around the track. Running or doing some type activity is one of the best cures. As I’ve gotten lazier, I would maybe say, sometimes just having water, having liquid IV or sometimes my grandma’s old trick of the hair of the dog is a real thing and kind of just help level you out for the day.”

“Coconut water is a major help with hangovers and also, a lot of times we go and eat Vietnamese pho. It’s a soup, and it’s got this awesome broth. You can get different things in it or whatever, but for some reason, it’s just like…it’s almost like a chicken noodle soup kind of an idea, you know, but it’s good. That’s good for hangovers too. That, sleep, Tylenol, coconut water and just water, in general. And when you’re drinking, have your alcohol, drink a little bit of water, drink some more alcohol, drink some water. Yup!”

“My best New Year’s Eve is definitely when my wife and I started back dating. We started back dating right before Christmas and we went on a trip down to Florida and met some friends. And her birthday is New Year’s Eve. We celebrated it that night and it was just a great night.”

“Well, this is probably a classic answer, but we did play New Year’s in New York and watched the ball drop and it was a big, special moment, one of those kind of check it off the bucket list type of moments, and we did that. “You know, Christmas didn’t lose any of its real meaning, as far as its religious meaning with Jesus’ birthday. But as far as like the whole tree and all of the Christmas spirit stuff, the secular stuff, it just kind of goes away to be honest. But then you have a family, and all of a sudden, it’s like I’m all Clark Griswold out there decorating the tree, putting lights up around the house, you know. So, all of those things that you did as a kid and appreciated as a kid, you get a chance to do over again when you have kids, because you kinda become one again.”

“I grew up in Arizona, so we didn’t have like a white winter kind of deal. It’s kinda…once you experience that, it’s hard to go back and like celebrate Christmas in the desert but…for us, we would…me and my family and a couple other families would go out to the desert and bring a big turkey and just kinda have a cookout in the middle of the desert…and drink beers and ride four-wheelers and…well, I wouldn’t drink beers, but they would. We’d ride four-wheelers and horses and just kind of spend it out in the middle of the desert, which was kind of a cool way to spend Christmas. So, whenever I think of Christmas, I always think of the desert, which is a little weird, but that’s just the way we did it out in Arizona.”

And every Christmas, one of our traditions was the kids – me and my two brothers – we would all stay in the same room on Christmas Eve and then we’d wake up when it was time to wake up, and we’d go down the stairs my parents would have a sheet at the bottom of the stairs so we couldn’t see all the presents; not that we weren’t going to see them in two seconds, but to them it was just the magic of the big reveal, them showing us all the gifts that Santa had gotten us. I’m just so thankful that my parents really kept that magic alive. And for me, I’m already thinking about Elf on the Shelf. I’m going to do all of the fun stuff.”

“With our dad every year, we would go looking for pumpkins, and we would all get our own pumpkin to carve, and he would buy the biggest pumpkin that they had. It was huge. I mean, it was way too big for any one person, but he would love carving. He’s kind of an artsy guy. He was a great drawer and stuff, and he would carve the most terrifying, vicious looking, scary pumpkin you’d ever seen in your life, and it would be massive. It would be like on a 50-pound pumpkin or something.”

And I don’t dress much anymore, but my favorite costume I ever had was (son) Jack dressed up as Darth Vader and I was Luke Skywalker. “Oh, when I was a kid, I was all into fireworks. Growing up in Arizona, we couldn’t get ’em, so we’d have ’em shipped in illegally. I still remember the name of the guy we’d call. His name was Joe, and he’d bring in, ship ’em in a package with no writing on ’em. We were all about M-80s in the mailboxes and bottle rocket wars. To me, as a kid, Halloween was fireworks, was blowing up stuff around home. [laughs]”

“My favorite Halloween costume really came, I remember when I got a little older my first year of college, there’s this thing they do every year in Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Halloween on Franklin Street. We drove down from Boone, North Carolina. I had a bunch of friends that went to University of North Carolina, and we didn’t have costumes and didn’t realize until we were on the way that we had to have costumes. So, we stopped at a costume place in Greensboro, North Carolina. It’s Halloween, so there’s a run on everything and couldn’t find anything. And we end up getting sent around, driving  around town. We end up finding this hole in the wall place, but they had the full costume, Sesame Street outfits. The real deal. The real ones [with] feathers and fur. We were Elmo, Cookie Monster and I was Big Bird, and the Big Bird was the actual Big Bird. It’s about 7-foot-4, and yiou looked out of the body and then you had these straps that went on since the head was a lot higher. There’s a lot of beer involved in Franklin Street, so we get down there and as the night went on, my straps broke, so the head would pivot. And so, I would be walking one way and the head would be facing the other, and it just became this funny…I didn’t know the head was on backwards. I had no idea. I see out of the body, so I’m just kinda walking around and people were talking to my ass-end. [laughs] The whole time peiople’d come up and start talking and go, ‘Hey, turn around.’ And I’d turn around, and they’d go, ‘No turn around.’ It was a mess. That year, there was no other Big Bird on Franklin Street.”

“So we played a show a few years ago in Baton Rouge and I go off stage and I come back on stage for the encore. I don’t know this until midway through the song, I’m just into the crowd, like I’m engaged. I’m in the zone, and I just see everyone, like everybody else behind me but me and I’m like what’s going on. I turn around and each of them has a different huge mask on, like one of those stuffed animal masks, like my drummer has a dinosaur head on. My guitar players, one of ‘em has monkey head on, the other has a unicorn head on. And my bass player has like a, I think a dog or cat head or something like that. I couldn’t finish the song I was laughing so hard just seeing them playing with these like oversized huge mask heads on Halloween night. That was funny. It was a good prank, so that was probably the most memorable Halloween.”

I think, though, my favorite Halloween was I was in college and I went as Luigi from Mario and Luigi, and I actually grew a legit mustache and dyed it jet black and ran into an ex-girlfriend at the costume shop and completely forgot I had the mustache on. So, when Is saw her, she was like, ‘So, you’re going with a mustache nowadays, huh?’ [laughs] I remember being like, ‘I swear this is part of my Halloween costume.’ [laughs] When I dyed my mustache, my top lip was black for a week. Like I really did dye it jet black.”

So, last year, actually for Halloween we were a little family of hedgehogs (laughs) ‘cause we put a little hedgehog costume on Leighton, at the time she loved hedgehogs, so Josh and I got hedgehog onesies. And this year, Josh and I are gonna be park rangers because Leighton is going to be a pink dinosaur. She’s going through a major dino phase; she calls ‘em dinos. And it’s gonna be adorable. And Maddie actually just told me her family’s costume theme. Forrest is going to be little E.T., and then Jonah’s gonna be Elliott and Maddie’s going to be Gertie. I cannot wait to see them in that costume.”

“Growing up, my parents were very, very conservative Christian, and so they viewed Halloween as a pagan holiday. BUT, I got to go trick-or-treating once in my life, and I dressed as a clown because my mom made me this clown suit and that was the best. We were in Moody, Texas. It was all three of my siblings and myself and we had so much candy that it lasted for months and months. My parents eventually had to throw it away because we had so much candy. And it was one of the most amazing, magical experiences I’ve ever had, because I never got to celebrate freaking Halloween. I tell you what, this son of mine is gonna definitely going to be celebrating trick-or-treating. Like I can’t wait to dress him up in all of the costumes.”

And I think we did a pretty good job.”

So when I heard this song and how the songwriters were able to color the pictures of what boots are in a rural country family, it’s pretty special stuff. And I love everything about this song. One of the best written songs I’ve heard in a while. And so glad it’s on this album.”

Luke Bryan – But I Got A Beer In My Hand (Story Audio): “But I Got a Beer in My Hand is obviously a single that we had out last year. And hey, it’s just big old fun when you got a beer in your hand. There’s no way not to have a good time.”

Luke Bryan – Kansas (Story Audio): “Kansas is certainly a love song in the way the writers were able to describe love by using Georgia and California and Colorado and obviously, you know Doing the analogy of wheat fields in Kansas. It’s just a really well done song and I cannot wait hopefully to be doing this in front of a lot of people one day.”

Luke Bryan – Country On (Story Audio): “Country On was obviously the first single off this project and I love the patriotism in this song. I love the unity that the song creates and from the rodeo imagery to the small town sports stuff to the Hey Hey USA. Been doing this song for a year and a half on the road and anytime I get the crowd singing Hey Hey USA it’s pretty powerful, watchin’ everybody be proud to be part of this great country of ours.”

Luke Bryan – Fish On The Wall (Story Audio): “Fish on the wall is just a good old fun kind of up tempo that reflects back to what was on my brain when I was in those teenage years, my formative years. But all we were really trying to do was just, like I said, go try to catch a big fish, something that we were proud of, and brag about it to all our buddies.”

Luke Bryan – She’s Still Got It (Story Audio): “She Still Got It is a really well done song that talks about a guy in a bar seeing an old flame of his and realizing, man this girl, she still got it. The way they wrote the verses with the images in the verses are really, really cool. It’s one of the more, it’s like a whisper kind of singing style and it’s something that I’ve never done. I’m not good at whispering. I’m typically the loudest person in the room. So when I had to kind of really sing this song soft, it was a learning curve for me and it’s a really tough song to sing, but I love how it turned out.”

Luke Bryan – Closing Time In Califorina (Story Audio): “Closing Time in California is a new style of song that I’ve never done. Obviously using the falsetto in the choruses is, I’ve done it on a couple things through the years, but this is, you know, a lot of people have commented on that and just the, you know, just the challenges of the guy that’s singing the song, trying to still be in love with a girl all the way across the country, coming home late, he’s waking up. I just love the whole mood of this song and you can really feel the hurt that the writers did a good job at just making you feel the hurt that this guy’s going through.”

Luke Bryan – For The Kids (Story Audio): “For the Kids is definitely one of the more emotional songs that I’ve ever written. I think when you hear the power of this, so many marriages out there go through different phases of their marriage and I think anybody with a long-term marriage has woke up and they’re like, yeah, the only thing that’s keeping us going is these kids. Because kids, they don’t mean to but they are… they demand a lot. And so sometimes the marriage gets a little pushed in the background because of the kids. So this song touches on all that. And I think at the end of the day, I hope it makes married couples kind of sit back, sit on the porch and go, hey, let’s have a day for ourselves and not always be for the kids every single day.”

Luke Bryan – Southern and Slow (Story Audio): “Southern and slow is just, hey, it’s about slowing it down from time to time. And when you’re in the country and when I go home down to my place in South Georgia, I slow it down a lot. A lot of times I never even hit the pavement. I go to the dirt road and I don’t see pavement for like a week. And that’s what southern and slow is all about.”

Luke Bryan – I’m On A Tractor (Story Audio): “I’m on a tractor is just the perfect picture of me getting out there on my farm, riding around on a tractor, checking out. The cell phone service doesn’t work. And the beauty of being on a tractor is you wake up and there’s like a field of hay or grass and then you get done on the tractor and you’ve just, you’ve cut the hay, you did some plowing, some tilling, and you can look back at your work and be like, hey, I just did that. And I’m on a tractor is about those moments and just kind of checking out mentally.”

Luke Bryan – Jesus ‘Bout My Kids (Story Audio): “Jesus About My Kids is just about teaching your kids the relationship of their faith and the relationship with Jesus and how, gosh, I mean, you pray so much for your children’s health and happiness and well-being and make sure that they live this life and get through this life. And then, you know, just how the songwriters were able to… do the little twist to make this work is really, really special. And I think this song is gonna touch a lot of people’s hearts because we’ve all, you know, we’ve all been there. You know, I used to talk to my kids about Jesus and now I’m talking to Jesus about my kids is just a great way to state something that’s so real and I can’t wait for people to enjoy this song.”

But I’ve always kind of leaned toward youthful fun, you know, just fun party music. I’ve always made, I mean, I hadn’t been just that, but I think I’ve kind of been put in that. Kind of in that category, which I love and I’ve enjoyed. And when people come to my show, I think they come to have a great time. But this album, there’s more mature type subject matters. And when I’m making it, I’m not sitting there, like I’m not even, it’s not like I have a mood board and we have a thought team of people. It’s just me cutting the stuff that gets me.”
